In Memoriam

Sister Ethel Detz, OP

Ethel Detz(1946-2015)

Sister Ethel Detz was born on July 19, 1946, in Detroit. She was the second oldest of six children born to Nicholas and Doris (Walkowski) Detz. She wrote the following about her childhood and family in her autobiography.

I have an older sister Fran, a younger sister Dolores and three younger brothers, Nicholas, Richard and Michael. I was in scouting for ten years before I entered. I loved the trips we took and especially enjoyed the overnight camping trips. In the summers, my sisters and I along with a few of our neighbors would put on plays in the basement.  We had a great time creating these skits. Sundays were special in our house. My dad was an usher and usually ushered at the 6:30 Sunday Mass. I remember he would hurry home after mass so that my mom could take the older kids to church and he would stay home with the younger ones. My dad would cook breakfast for us and we often took a Sunday drive into “the country” which of course is now Livonia, Michigan, with houses and stores.

To all who knew and loved Sr. Ethel,
My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. While working with Sr. Ethel in Niskayuna, NY at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center, we spent many lunch breaks together. She was a private person but her love of family was very obvious in the pride she had sharing pictures and stories of them - especially the little ones she had previously taken care of. I believe Sr. Ethel was used by God to show me wishes come true. She asked me what my one wish would be, which I answered and got two months after she left NY - 15 months after the question was asked. She will always be remembered with affection and be a part of the "collage" of my life.

To The Family And Community Of Sister Ethel Detz

Sister Ethel holds a place in my heart and in the hearts of many who met her during the time she worked at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center, in Niskayuna, NY. I heard her present information on several saints during the Breakfast with the Saints and the Soup with the Saints programs. She was always well prepared and an engaging presenter. Of special importance to me was a morning when Sister Ethel helped a group of us explore walking the labyrinth and praying about our experience. No matter what the occasion, Sister Ethel shared deeply and compassionately with the people and brought light and laughter to every encounter. Truly, she is now with members of her family, who have passed to the nearer presence of the Lord they all served.
