Sister Marion Coppe, formerly known as Sister Rachel Marie Coppe, died on August 28, 2017 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 84 years of age and in the 65th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister was born in Chicago to Louis and Eugenie (Comein) Coppe. She graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago and received a bachelor’s degree in English and a Master of Teaching degree in education, both from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.
Sister Marion ministered in elementary, secondary, and adult education for 48 years in Detroit, Gagetown, Wyandotte, Saint Joseph, Saginaw, Port Huron, and Paw Paw, Michigan. This includes teaching for two years at Dominican High School in Detroit, an Adrian Dominican institution. She was principal for five years at St. Mary School in Paw Paw.
Sister Marion was an adult educator for 19 years for the Port Huron Area School System, and for five years she was an elementary teacher for the Title 1 Government Education Program for Disadvantaged Children. She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2016.
Sister Marion is survived by two sisters: Rachel Bauwens of Glenview, Illinois, and Irene Schumaker of Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, John and Daniel Coppe.
Welcome of Sister Marion will be on Friday, September 1, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil Prayer and the Funeral will be live streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
