Barry University Named Center of Excellence by the National League for Nursing

By Meredith Amor, Director of Communications, Barry University

September 23, 2020, Miami Shores, Florida – Barry University’s distinguished Nursing Program is one of only 17 in the country, and the only in the state of Florida to earn the 2020 NLN Center of Excellence designation from the National League for Nursing.

The university’s undergraduate and graduate level programs were recognized by the NLN as outstanding for enhancing student learning and professional development.

“One of our many strengths at Barry is our long history of preparing both strong and compassionate nurse leaders,” said Dr. John McFadden, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “Our flexible and dynamic curricula empower and challenge students to not only excel but actively engage within their communities.”

Among the many factors that contributed to Barry University earning the 2020 designation is its Project for the Advancement of Interprofessional Collaboration and Education, known as Project ADVICE. This initiative, made possible through a grant from Mrs. Joan K. Stout, RN, FAAN, brings together students and faculty from across Barry University’s academic programs for simulated patient-care events, with the goal of encouraging a practice of professional collaboration. This unique program helps students prepare to advocate for their patients by working across every level and discipline of the health care industry.

Of the designation, Dr. Carolyn Hart, Chair of Nursing at Barry University, noted, “Having this honor means students can enter our program knowing that an unbiased, external group of experts has affirmed the quality of our graduates and the efforts of our nursing alum to meet the diverse needs of our different communities with compassion in an evidence-based practice.”

The prestigious distinction will be formally recognized at the 2020 Virtual NLN Education Summit Wednesday to Friday, September 23-25, 2020.
