April 14, 2021, Miami, Florida – The founding Director of Barry University’s newly dedicated Institute for Immigration Studies has strong, personal connections to immigration. Giselle Elgarresta Rios’ mother was one of 14,000 children who fled Cuba in Operation Pedro Pan during the reign of Fidel Castro. 

The Institute offers the perspective of Southern Florida to the issue of immigration – at a time when immigration continues to be an urgent and complicated issue. The Adrian Dominican Congregation, which founded and sponsors Barry University, has long advocated for just immigration reform, with a clear path to citizenship.
