Sister Mary Hemmen, formerly known as Sister Rose Maureen Hemmen, died on January 25, 2018 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 81 years of age and in the 62nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Mary was born in Detroit to Raymond and Ada (Noon) Hemmen. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit, and received a Bachelor of Philosophy Degree in English and a Master of Education Degree in Administration/Supervision, both from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian. Sister Mary was also certified in pastoral ministry and in religious education by the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Sister Mary spent 16½ years ministering in elementary education in Iron River, Michigan, and in Joliet, St. Charles, Chicago, and Elmwood Park, Illinois. She was resource director for two years and religious education coordinator for four years at St. Edmund Parish in Warren and religious education coordinator for 15 years at St. Lucy Parish in Saint Clair Shores, both in Michigan.
Sister Mary was Director of the Siena Literacy Center, a sponsored institution of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, for 11 years in Redford and three years in Detroit. In 2012, she chaired a committee to establish All Saints Literacy Center in Southwest Detroit. The center opened in 2014-15 as a sponsored institution of the Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Sister Mary became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2017. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Lawrence Hemmen, and cousins Sisters Loretta Therese Meier, and Anne Mary Kirwin, both in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. She is survived by loving nieces.
Welcome of Sister Mary will be on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Monday, January 29, at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil Prayer and the Funeral will be live streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
