Faith-Based Organizations Lead Successful Campaign in Holding Gun Manufacturers Accountable

June 1, 2022, New York, New York – A week after people around the world were shocked by the tragedy of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, a coalition of faith-based organizations led shareholders to call gun manufacturer Sturm, Ruger, and Company to greater accountability. The passage of the resolution took place June 1, 2022, during the corporation’s annual meeting.

Laura Krausa of CommonSpirit Health led the campaign for the shareholder resolution, which calls for Sturm Ruger to prepare a Human Rights Impact Assessment on their products. The Adrian Dominican Congregation – which sponsors two hospitals in the CommonSpirit Health System – is one of nearly 20 participating congregations of the health system. In addition, the Adrian Dominican Sisters co-filed the shareholder resolution campaign, along with other members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR).

Adrian Dominican Sister Judy Byron, OP, was also involved in the campaign as Director of the Northwest Coalition for Responsible Investment, also a co-signer of the proposal. “Shareholders know that these days are challenging for those involved in the firearms business,” Sister Judy said. “But these folks are also sons, daughters, parents, grandparents, and members of communities and places of worship who understand the importance of being able to feel safe in school, in church, in the supermarket. We will support and pray for them as they conduct this assessment and determine what changes to their business they will need to make in order to respect human rights, protect their stakeholders and make our society safer.”
