Sister Marie Carmen Gonzales, formerly known as Maria Carmen Gonzales, died on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 92 years of age and in the 59th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Marie Carmen was born in Albert, New Mexico, to Desidero and Vincentita (Montano) Gonzales. She graduated from Mosquero High School in Mosquero, New Mexico, received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, and earned a master’s degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
Sister spent 31½ years ministering in education in Kingman, Arizona; Albuquerque and Belen, New Mexico; Las Vegas, Nevada; and El Paso, Texas. She was administrator of Queen of Heaven School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1981 to 1983, and director of the Pre-School at Church of the Risen Savior in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1984 to 1986. Sister was housekeeper at the Adrian Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., from 1960 to 1967.
Sister Marie Carmen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Joseph Maestas, Leo, and Victor Arguello; and sisters Cecilia Trujillo, Marie, Amelia, Elvera, and Alice Tafoya. She is survived by two brothers, both from New Mexico: Johnny Arguello of Los Lunas and Eloy Arguello of Logan; and five sisters, all from New Mexico: Annie Bailey of Tucumcari, Tillie Archuleta of Clovis, Corrine Baca of Mosquero, Adelena Lopez of Albuquerque, and Jane Sandoval of Mosquero.

Welcome of Sister Marie Carmen will be on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Both the Vigil Prayer and the Funeral Mass will be live streamed. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
