Sister Mary Kathryn Cliatt, OP(1937-2023)

Sister Marilyn Uline, formerly known as Sister Mary Loretto, died on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 86 years of age and in the 67th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Marilyn was born in Lakewood, Ohio, to Charles and Harriet (Holmes) Uline. She graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in St Charles, Illinois, and received a bachelor’s degree in speech from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; a master’s degree in English from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.; and a Master of Pastoral Study degree in pastoral theology from Loyola University in Chicago. 

Sister ministered for more than 15 years in elementary and secondary education in Detroit and Jackson, Michigan; Cleveland and Conneaut, Ohio; and Chicago. She served nine years in campus ministry at Siena Heights College (now University) in Adrian and at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and ten years as a pastoral associate and in adult education in Evansville, Indiana, and St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, Sister Marilyn ministered for five years for First Investors Corporation in Chicago, five years for Eighth Day Center in Chicago, and seven years in clerical ministry in Utica and Troy, Michigan, and in Chicago. 

Sister Marilyn became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Mary Janet; and her sister, Rosemary Uline. Sister Marilyn is survived by sisters Lois Nugent (Dale) of Antioch, Illinois, Margaret Boyce (Thomas) of Lemont, Illinois, Mrs. Joanne Schutz (James) of Westlake Village, California, and Carol Uline of Jacksonville, Alabama; and a brother, Rev. Cyprian Uline, OFM, of Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, in the gathering space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery.

Sister Mary Kathryn Cliatt, OP(1935-2023)

Sister Mary Kathryn Cliatt, formerly known as Sister Helen Maureen, died on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 88 years of age and in the 66th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Kathryn was born in Miami, Florida, to James and Thelma (Barfield) Cliatt. She graduated from Edison High School in Miami and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Education degree from Barry College (University) in Miami.

Sister Kathryn ministered in elementary and secondary education for 17 years in Chicago; and Hollywood, Fort Pierce, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa, Florida, which includes two years as assistant principal at Tampa Catholic High School. She was a pastoral minister, social worker, and retreat minister for over 26 years in Cumming and Gainesville, Georgia. She also was Chapter Prioress for six years for the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Adrian Dominican Congregation and later served as Interim Prioress for that chapter. Sister ministered for three years as a mentor/spiritual advisor to orphans at St. Clare Centre in Meru, Kenya. Sister became a resident of Weber Center in Adrian in 2013.

Sister Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a sister, Martha Lim of Lake City, Florida, other loving family members, and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Prayers of Committal will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, in the Congregation Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

Sister Joan Murphy, OP(1926-2023)

Sister Joan Murphy, formerly known as Sister Margaret Patrick, died on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 97 years of age and in the 77th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Joan was born in Highland Park, Michigan, to Patrick and Margaret (Hanlon) Murphy. She graduated from Highland Park High School in Highland Park and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, followed by a Master of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy, both from University of Detroit (Detroit Mercy) in Detroit, Michigan.

Sister Joan ministered for 30 years in elementary and secondary education in Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio; five years in pastoral ministry in Flint, Michigan, and Clarksville, Georgia; and 12 years in religious education in Arvada, Colorado; Scottsdale, Arizona; Palm Springs and Twentynine Palms, California; Griffin, Georgia; and Mobile, Alabama. In addition, Sister Joan served five years at Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, was a health care volunteer for 16 years in Lexington, Kentucky, and spent time volunteering in New Orleans in 2007 to assist in the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Sister Joan became a resident at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2011.

Sister Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Patrick, John, Kathleen Craft, Margaret Costello, and Mary Wilson. She is survived by loving family members and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery.

Sister Janet Persyk, OP(1930-2023)

Sister Janet Persyk, formerly known as Sister Mary Paulette, died on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 93 years of age and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Janet was born in Detroit to Peter and Alice (Tate) Persyk. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Sister Janet ministered in education for more than 21 years in Detroit, Lansing, Ruth, Port Huron, and Owosso, Michigan; Tampa, Florida; and St. Charles, Illinois. This includes serving as a librarian for six years at two Adrian Dominican-sponsored institutions: Dominican High School in Detroit and Mount St. Mary Academy in St. Charles. Sister Janet also ministered for 27 years as a hospital chaplain in Chicago, Detroit, and Adrian and nine years as a hospice volunteer in Warren, Michigan.

Sister Janet was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by loving family members and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023, in the gathering space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery.
