(1939 - 2015) Sister Barbara Ann Stanek was born in Chicago on April 4, 1939, the only child of Walter and Julia (Wiktor) Stanek. She grew up in Schiller Park, Illiois, and, in addition to the loving care of her parents, she enjoyed the love and affection of her extended family who gathered at her maternal grandparents’ home for periodic celebrations. All who knew Barbara were aware of her affection for her cousins, especially Vivian.
Barbara met the Adrian Dominicans when she attended St. Celestine School and, after graduating from eighth grade, she enrolled in the Congregation’s Preparatory Program at the age of fourteen and attended St. Joseph Academy.

I lived with Barbara in Des Moines, Iowa and she was my Chapter Prioress here in the West. She was a prayerful, fun loving woman. When she was my principal in DesMoines I was teaching Kindergarten one day and she came to class. I had a strict rule about street shoes on the gym floor and Barbara came in her street shoes. One of the kids told her she couldn't come on the gym floor and Barbara said, " I'm the Principal" to which the kid responded, "It doesn't matter who you are". Needless to say, Barb went out and bought tennis shoes. She also loved to work puzzles and whenever we got togetherthat's what we did. I will miss her when I come to Adrian and always. sSCarol Elya
Our Adrian Dominican cemetery with its circular headstones is a beautiful place of rest for women who gave their lives in service to God — and a peaceful place for contemplation and remembrance.
