“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them….” (Mt. 19:14)
June 11, 2018, Adrian, Michigan – The following is a statement issued by the General Council of the Adrian Dominican Sisters in response to the practice by Immigration Officials of separating immigrant children from their parents at the border of the United States and Mexico.
Adrian Dominican Sisters urge an immediate end to the morally reprehensible practice of immigration authorities’ separating children from their mothers and fathers at the US-Mexico border.
Heartbreaking stories of children being taken into government custody as their parents are sent to sometimes far-flung detention centers – with no way of communicating with their children for days or weeks and uncertainty about whether they would be reunited – speak of a nation that has lost its moral compass.
No matter our differences on immigration policies, it is hard to imagine American parents and grandparents countenancing such cruelty in enforcing border control.
We call on President Trump to stop his Administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy of filing criminal charges against immigrants – including families seeking asylum from gang violence, rape, or political persecution. And we urge Congress to enact long-overdue immigration reform that enjoys broad public support and reflects American values, such as protecting young Dreamers and keeping families united.
THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT !
Imagine the fear the children are being subjected to.
God Bless the Sisters!
Are we becoming a Gestapo state. Separating mothers from breastfeeding infants is equal to starving a infant.
My heart is breaking for all my vulnerable brothers and sisters who are suffering from this recent U.S. Immigration policy that separates children from their parents. There is something deeply wrong and cruel in the Congress of the U.S. and this present U.S. Administration that would even consider such horrifying and terrifying laws.
Show you actually have a heart, President Trump!
I agree totally
How can this be happening in the USA?
These practices are placing USA among the counties that are stepping on the Human Rights, therefore how is USA accusing and attacking the other countries like Syria, Russia, North Korea, Somalia, and others of abusing the Human Rights? With which moral can USA sanction any other country that is abusing its powers around the world?America is becoming the JOKE of the XXI Century!I am embarrassed!
In complete support of the Adrian Dominicans message to President Trump about stopping Immigration Authorities from separating children from their parents at the US/Mexico border.
Thank you for speaking out on this issue as a Congregation.
Thank you Sisters!
Thank you for giving voice to a statement that acknowledges there are differing opinions about our country’s immigration policies, but that stands firmly and without equivocation on the side of morality, justice, and humanity. To separate children from their parents is inhumane, and inexcusable for a country that claims to be built on Judeo-Christian values.
Parents striving for a better life only to have children separated from them "heartbreaking and morally reprehensible' indeed, because of a would be dictator.
This statement is comprehensive, compacionate and manifests Jesus’ LOVE for children. Thank you for manifesting our collective solidarity in addressing thisIncomprehensible and horrendous action.
Thank yu for the power of a united statement. During my 16 years working with refugees, I saw first-hand the trauma, with its unspeakable terror and loss, inflicted on families fleeing for their lives. Our government now adds to that with a layer of cruelty beyond imagining.
