March 8, 2018, Wilmette, Illinois – Regina Dominican High School on February 21 hosted the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools (DASS) Day of Reflection, focusing on racism. Some 40 guests who work in theology and campus ministry in Chicago-area Dominican schools attended the event.
Jane Bleasdale, Assistant Professor at the University of San Francisco, gave the reflection, “Addressing Racism in our Schools.” Dr. Bleasdale, in earning her PhD from Fordham University, studied and documented ways that educators can change the classroom dynamic and how school leadership can require, support, and prepare their leaders and teachers to make those changes.
Dr. Bleasdale has taught in independent, private, parochial, and public schools in three countries. Her research focuses on equity and inclusion in high schools in the United States.
DASS is a member organization of nearly 30 high schools in 10 states, sponsored by Dominican Sisters and Friars.
At their 2016 General Chapter Meeting, the Adrian Dominican Sisters adopted four Enactments for living out their Vision. Regina Dominican High School’s recent day of reflection focused on the Enactment: "Recognizing that racism, violence, and intolerance of diversity fuel marginalization, we pledge our lives, money, and other resources to facilitate and participate in creating resilient communities with people who are relegated to the margins, valuing their faith, wisdom, and integrity."
