Miami Shores, Florida – September is a dedicated time for the Barry community to recognize the university’s commitment to “foster peace and non-violence.” This year’s Peace Month celebrations included prayers, service opportunities, and conversations on peacemaking endeavors throughout the world.

On the International Day of Peace, September 21, students, faculty, and staff had the opportunity to attend various workshops that were offered as part of Peace-In, an all-day event coordinated by Dr. Laura Finley in the Department of Sociology and Criminology. Workshop topics included intergroup dialogues, sex trafficking, death penalty abolition, sexual assault, to name a few. The presenters were Barry faculty and community members.

Sister Durstyne Farnan, OP, gives a presentation on “Peacemaking Challenges in Iraq” during Barry’s Mission Luncheon.
Also part of Peace-In was the Mission Luncheon presentation, “Peacemaking Challenges in Iraq,” with Adrian Dominican Sister Durstyne Farnan, OP. Speaking on the post-war displacement in the Middle East, Sister Durstyne invited the audience to consider Pope Francis’ definition of “peace building as people building.” The 130 participants in the Mission Luncheon included Adrian Dominican Sisters; Barry students, faculty, and staff; and 50 high school students from Doctors Charter School

The weekend prior to her September 21 Mission Luncheon, Sister Durstyne engaged with the St. Rose of Lima community in six mission appeals that led to a collection of $1,739 for the ministries of the Dominican Sisters in Iraq.

Barry’s Peace-In event concluded with a Deliberative Dialogue on “Policing and Community Relations,” which brought together Barry faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community representatives for a topic that impacts so many communities throughout the country. Coordinated by the Center for Community Service Initiatives, the Deliberative Dialogue Series serves as a forum of dialogue on current issues and has been received with excitement by the Barry community.

The topic for the next Deliberative Dialogue is “Coming to America: Unaccompanied Minors on a Perilous Journey.” This will follow the College of Arts and Science Mini-Conference on immigration, in which Sister Attracta Kelly, OP, Prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, will be the keynote speaker.
