December 20, 2024, Detroit – Siena Literacy Center, one of six literacy centers sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, was profiled in Model D, a digital magazine that focuses on the “dynamic communities, businesses, and residents of Detroit, Michigan.” Author Carole Hawke describes the literacy center as a “pillar of support for adult learners,” including a growing number of West African immigrants.
Siena Literacy Center offers one-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic English (ABE) and GED preparation for native English speakers, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring. Thanks to a new partnership with the Suzanne Cody Rouge Resource Center in Detroit, the Siena Literacy Center now offers group classes for English learners during the day.
Services at Siena Literacy Center also help adult learners in areas other than literacy education: rent assistance, transportation, child care, and the special needs of children – all of which can be obstacles to adults continuing their education.
