In Jesus’ parable of the Sower and the Seed, the sower scatters seeds on different types of ground. (Mark 4:3-8) What struck me is the receptivity of the “good soil”. Gardeners everywhere could describe what makes soil “good”. This one aspect of the soil – its receptivity – confirmed the soil knew what to do to nurture the seed into full life. In the discernment process we assume we’re the “good” soil, the receptive soil. But what makes us receptive?

One important ingredient is spiritual companionship. There are people who are experienced in spiritual companionship or direction and have skills in deep listening, in noticing how the Spirit may be guiding someone and in asking insightful questions. Each of us has our blind spots, those rocks and thorns that block our seeing and hearing the voice of the Spirit. A spiritual director or companion can assist us in clearing those blocks out of our spiritual pathway.

If you are discerning your purpose in life, whether a call to religious life and ministry or another choice, a spiritual director can help you nurture the receptivity of your heart, your good soil. Your heart receives the Spirit’s message. You can check with a local retreat center or someone at your local parish for names of spiritual directors. Tierra Receptiva

En la parábola de Jesús del Sembrador y la Semilla, el sembrador esparce semillas en diferentes tipos de tierra. (Marcos 4:3-8) Lo que me llamó la atención es la receptividad de la “buena tierra”. Los jardineros por dondequiera podrían describir qué hace que la tierra sea "buena". Este único aspecto de la tierra – su receptividad – confirmó que la tierra sabía qué hacer para nutrir la semilla hasta que alcanzara su plena vida. En el proceso del discernimiento asumimos que somos tierra "buena", la tierra receptiva. Pero, ¿qué nos hace receptivas?

Un ingrediente importante es el compañerismo espiritual. Hay personas que tienen experiencia en compañerismo o dirección espiritual y tienen habilidades para escuchar profundamente, para darse cuenta de cómo el Espíritu puede estar guiando a alguien y para hacer preguntas sabias. Cada una de nosotras tenemos nuestros ángulos muertos, esas piedras y espinas que bloquean nuestra habilidad de ver y escuchar la voz del Espíritu. Un director o compañera espiritual puede ayudarnos a eliminar esos bloqueos de nuestro camino espiritual.

Si está discerniendo su propósito en la vida, ya sea un llamado a la vida religiosa y al ministerio u otra opción, un director espiritual puede ayudarla a nutrir la receptividad de su corazón, su buena tierra. Su corazón recibe el mensaje del Espíritu. Puede consultar con un centro de retiro local o con alguien de su parroquia local para obtener nombres de los directores espirituales.
