Invitations come in multiple forms these days. Many of us remember when almost every invitation came via the post or hand delivery and was inscribed on paper with a lovely inscription, and perhaps some delightful characters on the front of the card. Occasionally, an invitation might be made with a phone call. Today, we might receive a (somewhat) formal evite or an email that invites us to some event.

One form of invitation has not changed. That is, the mysterious ways in which God invites every person to live a life of holiness. Holiness? Yes. When we choose to live a life of holiness, we choose to follow the ways of God. For Christians, we choose to live life in the manner of Jesus, we choose to help bring about the kingdom of God on Earth. This means that we show kindness, respect, and compassion to everyone, especially to those in need. We recognize each person as a sister or brother, regardless of how we might agree or disagree with them over any number of issues.

God invites each of us to be holy. How we live a holy life requires deep listening, because holiness is expressed in countless lifestyles. One of the ways that Dominican women and men have chosen to live is as vowed religious. When we choose this life, in addition to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, we commit ourselves to the Gospel in a unique way. Dominicans often refer to the “four pillars”: prayer, study, community, and preaching.

¿Está escuchando?

Las invitaciones se presentan en múltiples formas hoy en día. Muchas de nosotras recordamos cuando la mayoría de las invitaciones llegaban por correo o entregadas en mano y estaban escritas en papel con una hermosa inscripción y tal vez algunos caracteres encantadores en el frente de la tarjeta. En ocasiones, se hacía una invitación mediante una llamada telefónica. Hoy en día, es posible que recibamos una invitación, más o menos formal, por medio de un correo electrónico que nos invite a algún evento.

Una forma de invitación no ha cambiado. Es decir, las formas misteriosas en que Dios invita a cada persona a vivir una vida de santidad. ¿Santidad? Sí. Cuando elegimos vivir una vida de santidad, elegimos seguir los caminos de Dios. Los Cristianos elegimos vivir la vida a la manera de Jesús, elegimos ayudar a lograr el reino de Dios en la tierra. Esto significa que mostramos bondad, respeto y compasión hacia todos, especialmente hacia los necesitados. Reconocemos a cada persona como una hermana o un hermano, independientemente si podemos estar de acuerdo o en desacuerdo con ellos sobre cualquier número de cuestiones.

Dios nos invita a cada una de nosotras a ser santos. La forma en que vivimos una vida santa requiere escuchar profundamente, porque la santidad se expresa en innumerables estilos de vida. Una de las formas en que las mujeres y hombres Domínicos han elegido vivir es como religiosos con votos. Cuando elegimos esta vida, además de los votos de pobreza, castidad y obediencia, nos comprometemos de manera única con el Evangelio. Los Domínicos a menudo se refieren a los “cuatro pilares, ”oración, estudio, comunidad y predicación.
