Mary Magdalene, highlighted in the Gospel for Easter, is patroness of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. She was present at the death and resurrection of Christ and best models a faithful disciple’s response to Jesus: she stays, she pays attention, and she is open to transformation and to being sent forth.

After encountering the empty tomb, what did Mary Magdalene do? She stayed! She remained! She was outside the tomb weeping. That’s not a comfortable place to be. She was confused and didn’t know what was going on, but she did not walk away. She remained faithful, hoping still to offer an act of love for her beloved. Staying is not easy – being faithful to what is actually happening within and around us can be very challenging. But the only way to the other side of any suffering is through. 

To stay present to myself as I grieve losses, to stay faithful to religious life even though we don’t know what it will look like in the near future, to stay engaged in our world, even as we see time-honored institutions in crisis and collapse, to stay committed to caring for Earth even as we are aware of the magnitude of its fragility - stay, remain, abide.

Then pay attention – something is happening –unexpected voices call each of us individually and beyond. At first, we might not notice or understand the voices. For Mary Magdalene, a seemingly random gardener appears. She notices him and engages. She has turned away from the tomb and wants to serve and love. Everything changes when she hears her name spoken by her beloved! 

At some point in our staying and weeping, we stop and listen to the voice of the Risen Christ. A voice that honors our mourning and calls us when we are ready, one that engages us and helps us understand, one that sends us out to proclaim good news where we are.

Mary initially wants to encounter this Risen Christ as her teacher as he was while on earth. But he’s not the same and she needs to learn to relate to him in a new way. To pay attention, we realize that we may be called to new ways of understanding, that our image of Christ or God may change, our understanding of purpose in life might need updating, how we perceive and care for the world and Earth may need expanding. 

The Risen Christ invites us to listen with new ears and see with new eyes so we can see the signs and hear God’s call to life at this moment. Along with remaining and attending, Mary Magdalene is open to transformation. She lets her new awareness open her to a new way of being.  She moves from weeping to turning to announcing that Christ is risen – there is hope and life!  For Mary there is an inner turning, a true transformation. Resurrection is something new we never could have imagined or thought possible. It won’t look like the past or like we thought it might. There will be something remarkable and unexpected.

As disciples we are attentive to signs around us – even when we aren’t sure what they mean. We engage them to discover more. We listen for the Divine calling our name. And we let the God of surprises, of life, of new hope, of resurrection transform us to fullness of life– to be people who have the courage to proclaim Christ is risen and to witness that resurrection can be real in our world!

¡Ciertamente - Cristo ha resucitado!

María Magdalena, destacada en el Evangelio para la Pascua, es patrona de la Orden de Predicadores, los Domínicos. Estuvo presente en la muerte y resurrección de Cristo y es el mejor modelo de la respuesta de un discípulo fiel a Jesús: permanece, presta atención y está abierta a la transformación y al envio.

Después de encontrarse con la tumba vacía, ¿qué hizo María Magdalena? ¡Ella se quedó! ¡Ella permaneció! Ella estaba fuera de la tumba llorando. Ese no es un lugar cómodo.  Estaba confundida y no sabía lo que estaba pasando, pero no se alejó. Ella permaneció fiel, esperando aún ofrecer un acto de amor por su amado. Permanecer no es fácil: ser fiel a lo que realmente sucede dentro y alrededor de nosotras puede ser un gran desafío. Pero el único camino al otro lado de cualquier sufrimiento es pasar por.

Permanecer presente mientras sufro las pérdidas, permanecer fiel a la vida religiosa aunque no sepamos cómo será en el futuro cercano, permanecer comprometida con nuestro mundo, incluso cuando vemos instituciones tradicionales en crisis y colapsar, permanecer comprometidas al cuidado de la Tierra incluso cuando somos conscientes de la magnitud de su fragilidad: permanezca, manténgase, abite.

Después, preste atención - algo está sucediendo - voces inesperadas nos llaman a cada una de nosotras individualmente y a más. Al principio, es posible que no notemos o entendamos las voces. Para María Magdalena, aparece un jardinero inesperado.  Ella lo nota y le habla.  Ella se aparta de la tumba y quiere servir y amar. ¡Todo cambia cuando escucha su nombre expresado por su amado!

En algún momento en nuestra permanencia y llanto, nos detenemos y escuchamos la voz del Cristo Resucitado. Una voz que honra nuestra plegaria y nos llama cuando estemos listas, una que nos compromete y nos ayude a comprender, uan que nos envía a proclamar las buenas nuevas donde estemos.

María inicialmente quiere encontrar a este Cristo Resucitado como su maestro como lo fue en la tierra. Pero él no es el mismo y ella necesita aprender a relacionarse con él de una manera nueva. Para prestar atención, nos damos cuenta de que podemos ser llamadas a nuevas formas de comprensión, que nuestra imagen de Cristo o Dios puede cambiar, nuestra comprensión del propósito en la vida puede necesitar una actualización, la forma en que percibimos y cuidamos el mundo y la Tierra puede necesitar engrandecerse. 

El Cristo Resucitado nos invita a escuchar con nuevos oídos y que veamos con nuevos ojos para que podamos ver los signos y escuchar el llamado de Dios a la vida en este momento. Además de permanecer y asistir, María Magdalena está abierta a la transformación. Ella deja que su nueva conciencia la abra a una nueva forma de ser. Ella pasa del lloro, se voltea y anuncia que Cristo ha resucitado, ¡hay esperanza y vida! Para María hay un giro interior, una verdadera transformación. La resurrección es algo nuevo que nunca podríamos haber imaginado o creído posible. No se verá como el pasado o como pensábamos que sería. Habrá algo notable e inesperado.

Como discípulos, estamos atentas a las señales que nos rodean - incluso cuando no estamos seguras de lo que significan. Los involucramos para descubrir más. Escuchamos al Divino llamar nuestro nombre. ¡Y dejamos que el Dios de las sorpresas, de la vida, de la nueva esperanza, de la resurrección nos transforma a la plenitud de la vida, a ser personas que tengan el valor de anunciar que Cristo ha resucitado y de dar testimonio que la resurrección puede ser real en nuestro mundo!
