Meister Eckhart, a Dominican friar, priest and theologian, is credited as saying, “If the only prayer you say is thank you, it would be enough.” These words seem particularly fitting for Thanksgiving, when we pause amid the turkey, pies and football games to remember our blessings. While a cornucopia that produces endless stream of fruits, grain and vegetables is mythological, I find that the image aptly describes the abundance of the blessings that God gives me.

I am grateful for shelter and food, especially chocolate! I am grateful for my family, both immediate and the wild tangle that is my extended family that includes all sorts of kinfolk. I am grateful for the change of seasons, and the quieting of the world that takes place in November as the days grow darker and colder. I am especially grateful for the gift of my Adrian Dominican Sisters who do so much for me and for those most in need in the world.

On this Thanksgiving, may you have the opportunity to look around and notice the ways that God has been present in your life, and to realize how much is also coming forth from the cornucopia of your life. May you have a happy Thanksgiving celebration!

Cornucopia de Bendiciones

Meister Eckhart, un fraile Domínico, sacerdote y teólogo, se le atribuye haber dicho: "Si la única oración que dices es gracias, sería suficiente". Estas palabras parecen particularmente apropiadas para el Día de Acción de Gracias, cuando hacemos una pausa en medio del pavo, los pasteles y los juegos de fútbol para recordar nuestras bendiciones. Aunque una cornucopia que produce un flujo interminable de frutas, granos y vegetales es mitológica, encuentro que la imagen describe aptamente la abundancia de las bendiciones que Dios me da.

Estoy agradecida por el refugio y la comida, ¡especialmente el chocolate! Estoy agradecida por mi familia, tanto inmediata como mi familia extendida que incluye todo tipo de parientes. Estoy agradecida por el cambio de estaciones del tiempo y el aquietamiento del mundo que se lleva acabo en noviembre a medida que los días se vuelven más oscuros y fríos. Estoy especialmente agradecida por el regalo de mis Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian que hacen tanto por mí y por los más necesitados del mundo.

En este Día de Acción de Gracias, que tenga la oportunidad de mirar a su alrededor y notar las formas en que Dios ha estado presente en su vida, y de darse cuenta de cuánto está saliendo también de la cornucopia de su vida. ¡Que tenga una feliz celebración de Acción de Gracias!
