A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Discerning as a Way of Life | El Discernimiento Como Forma de Vida

When I first began discerning religious life, I thought that once I was done with discerning whether I should become a Sister and which community was for me that I would be done with discernment. I soon learned that discernment didn’t end when I entered my community, but was a practice that I would engage in for the rest of my life. Since entering my community, I have used my skills of discernment to make decisions on everything from my ministry and community living to my everyday life by asking myself how I can live out my life in a deeper and more authentic way. I have also learned about the communal aspect of discernment, where I am not making a decision as an individual by myself, but that I am called upon to have conversations with those around me and to integrate their wisdom into my discernment process.

This week, the Adrian Dominican Sisters are holding their General Chapter, a meeting where we have the opportunity to discern together the direction that we will take as a community over the next six years. Together we will listen to the wisdom that each Sister brings with her and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide our conversation. Each of the Sisters participating in the General Chapter will bring with her the skills that she has developed over a lifetime of discernment, and we will learn from one another during the days that we are meeting. I ask that you will hold us in prayer during these days when we are meeting and afterwards as we seek to live out what we have discerned during this sacred time.

Blessings,
Sister Katherine

Bendiciones,
Hermana Katherine
