When I began to discern religious life, I knew that one of the reasons that I was interested in becoming a sister was because I wanted to live in community with other women who were devoted to God, and shared my values. What I did not realize when I entered into conversations with my vocation director was how I would be living out those values of community while in discernment! Over the year we met regularly, our conversations gave me another glimpse of community life where we make mutual decisions and learn from one another. 

Since then, I have learned that involving others is an important part of discernment, and an important part of my time in community has been building up a community who can support me when I have a major decision, whether changing ministries, moving to a new location or saying yes to joining a committee. My network includes everyone from my spiritual director to my local community members to friends both in the congregation and outside of the congregation. 

As you discern choices in your own life, some questions you might ask are: 
·      Who do I need to include in my decision making process? 
·      Is there someone whose voice should be included? 
·      How are the others in my community helping me to see how God is present in my life?

Discernimiento En Comunidad

Cuando comencé a discernir la vida religiosa, supe que una de las razones por las que estaba interesada en ser hermana era porque quería vivir en comunidad con otras mujeres que fueran devotas de Dios y compartieran mis valores. ¡Lo que no me di cuenta cuando entré en conversaciones con mi Directora de Vocaciones fue cómo viviría esos valores de comunidad mientras estaba en discernimiento! Durante el año que nos reunimos con regularidad, nuestras conversaciones me iluminaron de como es la vida en comunidad donde tomamos decisiones mutuas y aprendemos unas de otras.

Desde entonces, he aprendido que envolver a otras es una parte importante del discernimiento, y una parte importante de mi tiempo en comunidad ha sido construir una comunidad que pueda apoyarme cuando tengo una decisión importante, ya sea cambiar de ministerio, mudarme a un nueva ubicación o decir sí a unirme a un comité. Mi red incluye a todas, desde mi Directora Espiritual hasta las miembras de mi comunidad local y amigas tanto dentro como fuera de la congregación.

A medida que discierne opciones en su propia vida, algunas preguntas que podría hacerse son:

• ¿A quién debo incluir en mi proceso de toma de decisiones?
• ¿Hay alguien cuya voz debería incluirse?
• ¿Cómo me ayudan las demás en mi comunidad a ver cómo Dios está presente en mi vida?
