When I was teaching sixth grade early in my teaching career, we were planting seeds in little pots to learn about planting and to study the growth process. Every day a student or two would ask why their seed wasn’t growing, until one day the sprouts broke through the ground. Of course not all the seeds grew at the same time and this led to a conversation about patience and time.

I was reminded about this story as I read and listened to the reading from the Epistle of James this past Sunday. The farmer must have patience. As the letter of James invites us, “Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.” (James 5:7-8)

When in discernment, we too must be patient. I remember I thought I was ready to move forward with the process; however, there seemed to be endless obstacles in my way. My mentor at the time said, “It will happen in God’s time, not yours.” And so it is. Movement in the process of discernment moves in God’s time, which is different from ours. God does not wear a wristwatch, yet knows when it is the right time to move to the next step.

El Tiempo de Dios

Cuando enseñaba sexto grado al principio de mi carrera de maestra, plantábamos semillas en pequeñas macetas para aprender a plantar y estudiar el proceso de crecimiento. Todos los días, uno o dos estudiantes preguntaban por qué su semilla no crecía hasta que un día los brotes brotaron de la tierra. Por supuesto, no todas las semillas crecieron al mismo tiempo y esto nos llevó a una conversación sobre paciencia y tiempo.

Me acordé de esta historia mientras leía y escuchaba la lectura de la Epístola de Santiago el Domingo pasado. El agricultor debe tener paciencia. Como nos invita la carta de Santiago, tened paciencia, hermanos y hermanas, hasta la venida del Señor. Mira cómo el labrador espera el precioso fruto de la tierra, teniendo paciencia con el hasta que recibe las lluvias tempranas y tardías (Santiago 5:7-8).

Cuando estamos en discernimiento, también nosotras debemos ser pacientes. Recuerdo que pensé que estaba listo para seguir adelante con el proceso, sin embargo, parecía haber un sinfín de obstáculos en mi camino. Mi mentor en ese momento dijo: "sucederá en el tiempo de Dios, no en el tuyo". Y así es, el movimiento en el proceso de discernimiento se mueve en el tiempo de Dios que es diferente al nuestro. Dios no usa un reloj, pero sabe cuándo es el momento adecuado para dar el siguiente paso.
