Journey of Self Discovery 

Discernment requires a foundation of self-knowledge. But! You might say, isn’t discernment about what God desires for me? Yes! And the best way to discover that is by recognizing who God has created us to be! We see this in scripture, when St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Ephesians that some are called to be apostles, while others have the gift to be a prophet or an evangelist, a pastor or teacher (Ephesians 4:11). St. Paul recognizes that not everyone has the same gifts, so the way each person lives out his or her vocation will be different. In another example of recognizing what gifts we have been given, St. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians about the value of celibacy, while acknowledging that many are called to marriage (32-40). These scripture passages remind us of the diversity of vocations among Christians, and the recognition that not everyone has the ability to live out every vocation. The challenge for us today is to recognize when a vocation may or may not be a good fit for who we are. 

Knowing who God has created us to be helps us to sort through our options. Sometimes, this means recognizing the values that we hold to be the most important. For example, some people, recognizing family is priority, might lead them to explore married life. Sometimes, knowing ourselves means that we have to recognize simply where we are happy. If we are happiest when we’re serving others then that can be a clue that is where we are called. Other important things to recognize are our gifts and talents. 

 

There are many different vocations and callings within the Church, and God calls us to a place where we can offer something for the world and find great joy.

Jornada De Autodescubrimiento

El discernimiento requiere una base de autoconocimiento. ¡Pero! Se podría preguntar, ¿no es el discernimiento lo que Dios desea para mí? ¡Sí! ¡Y la mejor manera de descubrirlo es en reconocer para quién nos ha creado Dios! Esto lo vemos en las Escrituras, cuando San Pablo escribe en la Carta a los Efesios que algunos son llamados a ser apóstoles, mientras que otros tienen el don de ser profeta o evangelista, pastor o maestro (Efesios 4:11). San Pablo reconoce que no todos tienen los mismos dones, así que, la forma en que cada uno vive su vocación será diferente. En otro ejemplo de reconocer los dones que se nos han dado, San Pablo escribe en 1 Corintios sobre el valor del celibato, aunque muchos son llamados al matrimonio (32-40). Estos pasajes de las Escrituras nos recuerdan la diversidad de vocaciones entre los Cristianos y el reconocimiento de que no todos tienen la capacidad de vivir cada vocación. El desafío para nosotros hoy es el reconocer cuándo una vocación puede o no acoplar bien con quienes somos.

Saber para quién nos ha creado Dios nos ayuda a analizar nuestras opciones. A veces, esto significa reconocer los valores que consideramos más importantes. Por ejemplo, algunas personas, al reconocer que la familia es una prioridad, puede llevarlas a explorar la vida matrimonial. A veces, conocernos a nosotras mismas significa que tenemos que reconocer simplemente dónde somos felices. Si somos más felices cuando servimos a los demás, entonces eso puede ser una pista de hacia dónde somos llamadas. Otras cosas importantes a reconocer son nuestros dones y talentos.

Hay muchas vocaciones y llamamientos diferentes dentro de la Iglesia, y Dios nos llama a un lugar donde podemos ofrecer algo para el mundo y encontrar gran gozo.
