One of the most beloved hymns during Advent is "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." The words from this hymn can be traced to the 6th century, and since then, they have become an important part of our celebration of Advent. The crying out for Emmanuel, God who is with us, speaks to a deep place inside us where we desire for God to accompany us on our journey through life.

I have heard different experiences of people going through the discernment process. Some people have a strong sense of God’s presence while they are in the midst of making a decision. Other people have described the process as being bewildering, and they are not sure where God is present as they ponder their answer. I have been in both places during my times of discernment, and I have learned that, even at those times when I have not been aware of God’s presence, I can later find God as I reflect back on those times.

We come to know Emmanuel when we least expect it, whether those times of isolation and loss, or those times when we are helplessly confused and afraid. God is with us during those moments, as much as when we are celebrating moments of joy and happiness. "O Come, Emmanuel" is the cry of those who wonder if they are forgotten and the promise that God remembers them.

In these final days before Christmas, my prayer for you is that you might know the close presence of God who is with us.

Oh Ven, oh Ven, Emmanuel

Uno de los himnos más queridos durante el Adviento es "O Ven, O Ven, Emmanuel." Las palabras de este himno se trazan al siglo VI y, desde entonces, se han convertido en una parte importante de nuestra celebración de Adviento. El clamor por Emmanuel, Dios con nosotras, habla de un lugar profundo dentro de nosotras donde deseamos que Dios nos acompañe en nuestro camino por la vida.

He escuchado diferentes experiencias de personas que están pasando por el proceso de discernimiento. Algunas personas tienen un fuerte sentido de la presencia de Dios mientras están tomando una decisión. Otras personas han describido el proceso como desconcertante y no están seguras de dónde está Dios presente mientras reflexionan sobre su respuesta. He estado en ambos lugares durante mis momentos de discernimiento, y he aprendido que, incluso en esos momentos en los que no he sido consciente de la presencia de Dios, puedo encontrar a Dios más tarde al reflexionar sobre esos momentos.

Llegamos a conocer a Emmanuel cuando menos lo esperamos, ya sea en esos momentos de aislamiento y pérdida, o en esos momentos en las que estamos confundidas y asustadas. Dios está con nosotras en esos momentos, tanto como cuando estamos celebrando momentos de alegría y felicidad. "O Ven Emmanuel" es el lloro de las que se preguntan si son olvidadas y la promesa de que Dios se acuerda de ellas.

En estos últimos días antes de Navidad, mi oración por uested es que pueda conocer la presencia cercana de Dios que está con nosotras.
