When discerning religious life, there are many steps. What is important to remember is the first step is just the first step. It is easy to get caught up in “God will tell me exactly what I need to do.” Discernment does not really work that way. It is a journey of choices which lead to the next choice. The choice one makes will either confirm the right path is being taken or bring out the doubts, which allow for a backstep or a different choice.

For me, it was the first thought of becoming a Sister, then to discover what a 21st century Sister was, continuing with my yes by deepening my prayer life, visiting different communities, and attending a couple of Come and See retreats. When attending the Come and See retreat with the Adrian Dominican Sisters, the calling to religious life got stronger. When I entered my candidate year, I still was not sure this was the vocation God was calling me to, but I knew unless I said yes to entering, I would never know. This yes to entering was just the first step in a line of yeses to fully embrace the life God called me to, with the desire in my heart getting stronger with each step.

So do not be afraid of the first step; it is, after all, just the first step. The Sisters pray with you and for you each step of the way.

El Primer Paso es el Primer Paso

Hay muchos pasos que se toman durante el proceso de discernir la vida religiosa. Lo que es importante recordar es que el primer paso es sólo el primer paso. Es fácil quedarse atrapada en la idea de que “Dios me dirá exáctamente lo que tengo que hacer”. El discernimiento realmente no funciona de esa manera. Es una jornada de decisiones que se dirigen a la próxima decisión. La decisión que uno hace, le confirmará que está tomando el camino correcto o le sacará a la luz las dudas que le permitará dar un paso atrás o tomar una decisión diferente.

Para mí, fue el primer pensamiento de ser hermana, luego descubrir lo que era una hermana del siglo 21, continuando con mi sí profundizando mi vida de oración, visitando diferentes comunidades y asistiendo a un par de Retiros de Ven y Ve. Al asistir al retiro Ven y Ve con las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrián, el llamado a la vida religiosa se hizo más fuerte. Cuando entré a mi año de candidata, todavía no estaba segura de que ésta fuera la vocación a la que Dios me estaba llamando, pero sabía que si no dijera que sí a entrar, nunca lo sabría. Este sí a entrar fue solo el primer paso de una serie de respuestas de sí para abrazar plenamente la vida a la que Dios me llamó con el deseo en mi corazón haciéndose más fuerte con cada paso.

Así que, no tenga miedo del primer paso, después de todo, es sólo el primer paso. Las hermanas oran con usted y por usted a cada paso del camino.
