The Gift of Spring

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. I love all the new growth, the leaves on the trees, the tulips and daffodils pushing through the ground announcing warmer weather and more sunshine are on the way. I also return to a favorite pastime of walking prayer. I have made most of my important decisions during walking prayer. I don’t use Spotify or Pandora but use the sights and sounds of nature as my music. I would like to think as a Dominican, I am using one of St. Dominic’s favorite forms of prayer as he walked everywhere. 

God has a lot to say to us through Mother Nature, we need only be attentive to her voice.   My favorite example is when I was in the Novitiate (initial formation) I was struggling to hear God’s voice. Our group was on retreat, and I was walking along a freshly mowed path when I found a single wildflower standing straight and tall right where the path had been mowed. I was astonished, how in the world did the mower miss cutting down this flower? It was like the flower was determined to show itself. As that little flower reached toward the sun, I decided to do the same, as the warmth of the sun touched my face, I felt my struggles slide away. I felt joy in the sun, much like the little flower. I was reminded of the first letter of Peter (1Peter 5:7), “Give your worries and cares to God.” Discerning religious life will have struggles; the path is not always straight and easy; however, God is there to walk with you. So, I encourage you to take a walk!

El Regalo de la Primavera

La primavera es una de mis estaciones favoritas. Me encanta todo el nuevo crecimiento, las hojas de los árboles, los tulipanes y narcisos que abren paso por la tierra anunciando que vendrá más sol y un clima más cálido. También regreso a mi pasatiempo favorito: la oración caminando. He tomado la mayoría de mis decisiones importantes durante la oración caminando. No uso Spotify ni Pandora, pero uso las vistas y los sonidos de la naturaleza como mi música. Me gustaría pensar que, como Dominicana, estoy usando una de las formas de oración favoritas de Santo Domingo mientras él caminaba por todas partes.

Dios tiene mucho que decirnos a través de la Madre Naturaleza, sólo debemos estar atentas a su voz. Mi ejemplo favorito es cuando estaba en el Noviciado (formación inicial) y luchaba por escuchar la voz de Dios. Nuestro grupo estaba en retiro y yo caminaba por un camino recién cortado cuando encontré una sola flor silvestre erguida y alta justo donde el camino había sido cortado. Me quedé asombrada, ¿cómo fue que el cortacésped no cortó esta flor? Era como si la flor estuviera determinada a mostrarse. Mientras esa pequeña flor se acercó al sol, decidí hacer lo mismo, cuando el calor del sol tocó mi rostro, sentí que mis luchas se alejaban. Sentí alegría en el sol, como la pequeña flor. Me acordé de la primera carta de Pedro (1 Pedro 5:7): “Entrégale a Dios tus ansiedades y preocupaciones”.  Discernir la vida religiosa tendrá luchas; el camino no siempre es derecho y fácil; sin embargo, Dios está ahí para caminar con usted.  ¡Así que las animo pasearse!
