A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

We Remember | Nos Recordamos

candle light vigil

While reflecting on the significance of these holy days, I found myself remembering an incredibly soul wrenching experience that took place many years ago. It was during a beautiful Liturgy at a parish that I was blessed to call my liturgical home. A tall, stately gentleman sitting next to me was fighting back tears until he began to weep. I was aching for him and was uncertain as to what I should do. When I turned to him with what I hope were empathetic eyes, he looked at me and said “my son just died.” With those words came another release of tears.

Without knowing anything else about this gentleman, I remember feeling that all of us around him were deeply connected to him in his pain. While terribly difficult, I recall thinking what a privilege it was for us to “be with” this man in a faith community.

Later this week, we will spend time “together” commemorating the mystery of community, of suffering, of sorrow, and of new life. Through ritual we will remember and celebrate that love triumphs over hate, that life is stronger than death, and that God’s love is without end. Alleluia!

Peace and blessings,

Sr. Maribeth

¡Aleluya!

Paz y bendiciones,

Hermana Maribeth
