Jacob Boor

(English version below)

The Dominican charism manifests itself in surprising ways, as Adrian Dominican Associate Jacob Boor can attest. When asked how long he has been an Associate, he says, laughing, "I can't remember. Being a Dominican is who I am. I may question other things in life, but never being a Dominican Associate."

Jacob didn't know anything about Dominicans when he met his future mother-in-law, Mary Lach, Director of Associate Life, but she knew immediately that he was meant to share in Dominican life. With open arms that are welcoming to everyone, the Adrian Dominicans give him a sense of belonging and community that he greatly appreciates.

Jacob, his wife and son, and his parents-in-law all live together in Clinton Township, Michigan. Their intentional, multi-generational household works very well for them. Their appreciation for this lifestyle endured even through the pandemic, when all adult family members needed to work from home and Jacob's son attended school online.

Music is the way in which Jacob finds and worships God. Creating music, especially with others, gives him so much joy and he wants to share that joy with others. He has been involved with music most of his life, earning a degree in music, singing in numerous choirs, and playing in a saxophone quartet and a worship band. He is in the Royal Oak Concert Band, along with his wife, Laura, a flutist. He is excited that their band will give two outdoor performances this year at local parks.

Jacob says he feels blessed by music. One way music speaks to him is through the stories it can tell, from either the events that prompted the composition or the circumstances under which it was performed. A few years ago, for example, the Cantata Academy Chorale, in concert with many other choirs, performed Verdi's Requiem at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

What makes this piece of music so important to Jacob and other musicians is that during World War II it was performed as an act of defiance against the Nazis by Jewish musicians interned in Terezin/Theresienstadt, a propaganda camp. The musicians interned in the camp were required by the Nazis to perform for "guests" to show that they were happy and treated well. They chose this composition because, through the Latin text, they were able to sing the anger they felt at the Nazis in a way that would not be readily apparent to their captors. Their conductor, however, had only one copy of the music score, so all performers had to learn to sing their part from memory.

To pay homage to the difficult situation those performers had to endure, Jacob and the other concert singers learned to sing the last movement of the Requiem from memory. That was really tough, he says, even though they had months to learn it and they each had their own copy of the music. Performing this was a powerful and moving experience for Jacob. He wants to share these kinds of stories with others.

An avid seeker of knowledge, Jacob says he is on a "constant quest for knowing things." He finds topics that interest him and researches them obsessively. He will watch a program on television and then stay up until 3:00 a.m. learning more about the topic and how and why it matters to our world. Study is a part of Dominican life for which Jacob feels he has the most affinity.

Jacob is also a runner, which he credits to his being a "reality show junkie." One show in particular encouraged contestants to run a marathon to lose weight. Considering himself to be somewhat more fit than the contestants, Jacob felt he could definitely do this. He got a Couch to 5K app that he used as his training coach and completed three half-marathons. He ran the Detroit Marathon, a course that crosses the Canadian border. His dream is to run a marathon around Loch Ness in Scotland.

Jacob finds great satisfaction helping people in many ways. A pharmacy technician, he is working with a special pharmacy program that provides medication to patients with multiple sclerosis who otherwise could not afford it.
