Baptized Rosa Custo, Sister Viviana was born on June 23, 1938, in the Village of Għarb on Gozo Island which is part of the island-nation of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. She was the second of nine children born to Joseph and Anna (Mercieca) Custo. The Constitution of Malta establishes Catholicism as the state religion and it is also reflected in various elements of Maltese culture.
