(1922-2016)
Sister Alice Wolski, formerly known as Sister Walter Marie, was born August 26, 1922, in Detroit. She was the fourth of six children born to Walter and Sophie (Flens) Wolski. In her autobiography, she wrote the following about her family and education.
I grew up during the Depression and I know that my parents had to struggle to keep food on the table and clothes on our backs. When I was born my parents had already lost a child and the two youngest born to our family did not live beyond the age of two. I remember the sadness in our home at the time of their deaths, but I always remember my parents as people of great faith and tremendous love.
My early education took place at Holy Name School in Detroit. I had Adrian Dominican Sisters as my teachers throughout elementary school. When it came time to choose a high school, it had to be East Commerce High School on the east side of Detroit. During my senior year, I decided that God was calling me. I kept in touch with the sisters at Holy Name. A couple of the sisters thought that God didn’t give vocations to girls in “public schools,” but Mother Gerald thought otherwise.

Sister Alice was one of my most memorable teachers, that I ever had. I had her for a teacher in 5th grade at St Jude. She was tough as nails but in a good way. She wanted to make us soldiers of Christ! I made her and her sisters bread and she wrote me a lovely note. When we moved to Warren after Detroit, she was at my parish or saw her at the fish fry’s. I wish I spoke with her more as an adult. She was one incredible warrior of Christ. Thank you Sr Alice. It took me to an adult to understand your words you told me as a child. I get it now. God bless you
I am so very blessed to know Sr. Alice Wolski since 1980. We taught at St. Jude School in Detroit from 1980-1990. Our classrooms were next to each other. Sister Alice loved being part of the Adrian Dominican family and demonstrated this commitment every day of her life as a very Spirit filled Sister. She always put her life in God's hands. Not only was she a tremendous teacher, but she was a dear friend. We both left St. Jude in 1990 and stayed in touch these many years. We have been prayer partners for the past 30 years. I'm sure she is in Heaven playing Tennis with the Pros!!!! She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Eternal memory to one of the best.
She was/is a very Special Lady who inspired many. She was always caring and attentive to our children and us. I remember many times when she visited she would ask everyone for updates on their lives and always read books to our children who enjoyed it greatly! We always talked football when she came or called, she liked the Lions. She has served her purpose here on earth and is now being rewarded for all her years of service to the Church and our Lord, she will be missed by many.
Our Adrian Dominican cemetery with its circular headstones is a beautiful place of rest for women who gave their lives in service to God — and a peaceful place for contemplation and remembrance.
