In Memoriam

Sister Maris Stella Beaufait, OP

(1922-2016)

Sister Maris Stella Beaufait, the seventh child of Joseph E. and Matilda Ida Louise (Couchez) Beaufait, was born on October 24, 1922, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

She was baptized Mary Jane in honor of her paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Lennon. In her autobiography, Sister Maris Stella wrote:

My mother and father both came from farming families. My father was the fifth generation of Beaufaits in the Detroit area. Louis Beaufait, my great, great, great grandfather, was born in France in 1733 and came to Detroit in 1761. He played an important part in the early history of the city. His son, Louis, who was a colonel in the War of 1812, was the owner of a farm which bordered the Detroit River and extended back across Gratiot Road. Beaufait Avenue in Detroit was a part of what was his farm.

My mother was raised on a farm in St. Clair Shores at [what is now] Thirteen Mile Road and Harper. Mother came from a large family, six boys and six girls. Only one of my uncles married and he late in life. They all worked on the farm and my Aunt Margaret kept house for them.

Sr.Maris Stella was the Principal of St.Pius X, . I started elementary school around 1959 through 1964. I had and loved Sr.Agnes Patrick in second grade and she was a kind and gentle woman. I, unfortunately had a repeating bout of boils on my legs which frequently broke open probably from our wooden desks. Sr.Maris Stella and Sr Agnes Patrick frequently were stuck cleaning me up. They were always gentle and treated me so sweetly. I have never forgotte either of then. Thanks to God for giving them both to me .

I just found out of my Great Aunts passing, Sister Maris Stella. She will be missed by many and will be in my heart always. She was the sweetest most gentle person I knew. I did not see her much in my older years but I can still hear her sweet voice when I think of her. Bless her and all of the Sisters that loved and cared for her over the years. Love her Great Niece, Amy

Sister Maris Stella was a kind and loving person. I attended St Pius X in Southgate for 8 years. My sympathies for those who loved and cared for her.

I was very blessed to have Sr. Maris Stella as my very first superior when I was missioned at St. Pius in Southgate, MI. She was a very loving and understanding lady with a heart of gold.

I was a postulant at St. Pius X in Southgate, MI. Sister Maris Stella is one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of knowing! She made the home at St. Pius X convent a very happy place to be. I think often of memories from my truly 1st mission. It was also special because my Dad built the school that I taught in!!! Heaven has gained a truly beautiful woman and I am proud to say I know her!!!
