Sister Mary Diane McMeekin, OP

Sister Mary Diane McMeekin, OP

(1941-2018)

I was not the best little girl. Whenever I got caught doing something like smoking in sixth grade my father would say, “Believe me, when my ship comes in you are going to go to a boarding school.” And I thought, “I don’t need to worry about that. We [are] poor; our ship is never coming in.”

… So I was going into eighth grade and every Sunday we would go to a church that had a school to find out if I could go to that school. We went to Precious Blood … and we met this sister, and I wish I knew who it was because she was an Adrian Dominican and she said to my father, “Have you ever thought about maybe sending your daughter away to a school?” I wanted to kick her.

This anecdote from Sister Mary Diane McMeekin’s life story, told in 2017 via an interview with Sister Donna Baker, explains exactly how it was that Sister Diane came to be a St. Joseph Academy student. As the story continues, her father went on to tell the Sister at Precious Blood that the family could not afford boarding school … only to have the Sister inform him that all he needed to do was go to Adrian and meet with the principal, Sister Mary Angeline Steele, and she would work something out with him.

“We got in the car right then and there and drove to Adrian,” she told Sister Donna.

I quite by accident found this post on Sister Diane. I met her when my first son entered Kindergarten at OLQM in Fort Lauderdale, in 1976. She had moved to move near Orlando, Florida but for a short time. She lived by the Atlantic Ocean. I knew her a long time, both my son’s Rick and Brian Tull attended her K class. After my oldest graduated from OLQM we moved to Dade City, Florida and visited her often. She moved to Good Shepherd and I still had a visit or two. We had a few conversations when she lost her sister and it was very trying for her, not that she thought of herself but her sisters children. She was an extremely caring person. I am reminded of her everyday. She gave me a pair of earrings in the same year we met. A precious reminder of someone I truly loved and respected. She remains in my heart.

I met Sr. Diane in 1974 at OLQM in 1976 and we became fast friends, I was so surprised to hear about her passing. I would like to send my sympathy
to her nephew Steve and her niece Cathy and their families. She spoke of them often and kept me posted on how well they were doing.
I will miss our phone calls and seeing her after I moved to the Orlando area. I will also miss her smile when she talked about my son. She
enjoyed all the trouble he caused in her kindergarten class. Prayers for her and her family.

I was privileged to work with SrDiane at Good Shepherd Catholic School for all her years there.
She was an advocate for all the staff at the GS Preschool. SrDiane taught me the true meaning of Obedience, Deep Catholic Faith and Unconditional love . I will miss her and always remember and love her.

Sister Diane and I worked together for 21 years as Administrators for the children and teachers of Good Shepherd Catholic School. We continued as close friends and prayer partners for the last 8 years. She was a shining example of a loving and caring child of God for hundreds of children, parents and teachers. Many people call her their friend, but she was most proud of being a "SISTER" and "Aunt." We will miss her joyous greeting of ,"How are you?" and her ability to listen to all of us. We counted on her guidance and prayers and we will look to her for help from her heavenly desk.

I have had the privilege of knowing Sister Diane for the past 26 years of my life. She was a constant in a storm as I looked forward to her words of wisdom and willingness to listen as my Mother battled cancer. She was my preschool Director at Good Shepherd in Orlando, FL. My Late Mother Irene worked with Sister as I attended Good Shepherd Preschool. Years later, In 2013, we were reunited. I had the privilege of walking Sister to her car after 6pm mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Winter Park, Florida. She will be sorely missed and has meant so much to my family over the years. I take solice in the fact that I know she is with God the Father smiling down upon all of us.
