“A woman of generosity and gratitude, a lover of children, cats, and life.”
That was how Sister Mary Jane Lubinski, OP, Adrian Crossroads Chapter Prioress, remembered Sister Patricia (almost always known as simply “Pat”) Janowicz at the Vigil Service held after Sister Pat’s death.
Sister Pat was born on May 27, 1941, in Wyandotte (Michigan) General Hospital, the only child of Sigmund and Frances (Lisek) Janowicz. All four of her grandparents were Polish, and she grew up surrounded by rich Polish traditions. Pat remembered in her autobiography that she called her grandparents either the “Wyandotte grandma and grandpa” (her mother’s parents) or the “Detroit grandma and grandpa” (her father’s parents) so as to distinguish which set she was going to visit.
When Sister Pat was very small, the family moved from an apartment to a small house in Dearborn, Michigan, and from there, in 1945, to a larger home on Detroit’s northwest side. Sigmund worked as a truck driver, hauling sand to make concrete, and as a little girl, Sister Pat, a self-described tomboy, played not with dolls but with toy trucks and sand.

I am a retired teacher from East Jordan, MI. I worked with Sister Pat in the public school setting and was trying to locate her as I found a picture of her and wanted her to have it. In my search, I discovered that Sister Pat had passed away. It saddened my heart but still brought a smile to my face because I had the opportunity to work with her and to know what a wonderful, kind, and funny person she was. Truly a good person....
S. Pat was always kind and helpful. She had a great sense of humor. She was very helpful with my grandson who was ADHD. We learned many things from her. She is missed by all. My thoughts and prayers go out to her other family and friends.
My family is very sorry to hear of Sister Pat’s passing. She worked with my Aunt Genny in the transportation department. When my parents came for jubilee she made a lasting impression on my Dad. Out of all the white haired nuns she stood out. Her humor & kindness are thought of with love today. Thank you for all your years of service. Our family sends our thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. .
I have the fondest memories of living with Sr. Sigmund! She was always a little ball of energy with a smile on her face, I WOULD tell her to Rest in Peace, but something tells me she is already creating mischief with the angels. You were always a joy, Sr. Sigmund! See you on the other side!!!! You will be missed!!!
Our Adrian Dominican cemetery with its circular headstones is a beautiful place of rest for women who gave their lives in service to God — and a peaceful place for contemplation and remembrance.
