October 4, 2022, Miami, Florida – Barry University recently launched a School of Nursing to address nursing shortages across South Florida and the nation by preparing well-trained nurses to enter the workforce.
South Florida healthcare leaders have been clear: the nursing shortage has reached an all-time high and is placing a strain on Florida’s healthcare infrastructure. Barry University’s School of Nursing will prepare students to become entry-level professional nurses, nurse educators, and nurses who engage in research.
The School of Nursing is designed to overcome many barriers to educating more nurses by providing more technology resources, building stronger clinical partnerships, and supporting a diverse field of nursing students and faculty. The school will be housed at the newly structured College of Health and Wellness.
Tony Umadhay, PhD, CRNA, APRN, has been named Dean of the School of Nursing. One of the first Filipino-Americans to lead a nursing school in the United States, he brings nearly 30 years of experience as a clinician, hospital manager, and educator. He joined Barry’s faculty in 2006 and was appointed director of the anesthesiology programs in 2008. He has since served as Interim Chair of Nursing and Associate Dean for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
“As a nurse who migrated to fill critical U.S. workforce gaps in the 1990s, I am once again humbled by the opportunity to serve during this pivotal transition phase in the 2020 pandemic,” Dr. Umadhay said.
“I am very pleased that Dr. Umadhay will be leading our School of Nursing at such an important time in our profession,” said John McFadden, Vice Provost of Health and Wellness.
Barry University’s School of Nursing is formed from the foundation of the former College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Nursing Program, which was created in 1953. The school is home to nationally ranked undergraduate (BSN), graduate (MSN), and doctoral programs (DNP, PhD).
