February 7, 2018, Miami Shores, Florida – Barry University faculty, staff, and students can now purchase non-certified organic produce, eggs, honey, and coffee from Barry FairShare, a community-supported agriculture distribution project.
The Center for Community Service Initiatives has developed the project in partnership with Urban GreenWorks, a local environmental and food access organization.
Participants may purchase shares of assorted seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs sourced from a cooperative of South Florida farmers, including Urban GreenWorks’ Cerasee Farm in Liberty City. A full share is valued at $52 and includes approximately 20 produce items. A half share is valued at $31 and includes 10 to 12 produce items. A Barry student share is also available for $23 and includes seven to nine produce items, mostly fruit, which can be prepared easily in a residence hall.
Barry FairShare purchases provide revenue directly to local farmers, encourage healthy eating among young people, and support efforts to eradicate urban food deserts in low-income neighborhoods of Miami-Dade County, including Liberty City and Little Haiti. All produce is non-certified organic and harvested from sustainable small farms.
