CommonSpirit Health Pays Tribute to CEO Lloyd Dean on His Retirement

May 25, 2022, San Francisco – Lloyd H. Dean, CEO of CommonSpirit Health, received the Humankindness Lifetime Achievement Award during a special tribute May 16, 2022. He is retiring after 44 years of service in the healthcare field – 22 years in the Catholic health ministry.

CommonSpirit Health was created in early 2019 through the formal alignment of Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives. It covers 21 states and operates 1,000 care sites, including 137 hospitals. These include Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, California, and St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Henderson and Las Vegas, Nevada, founded by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. Lloyd was the founding CEO of CommonSpirit Health. He had served as CEO of Dignity Health since 2000.

In his honor, CommonSpirit Health and the CommonSpirit Foundation created the Lloyd H. Dean Institute for Humankindness and Health Justice.

Among those who paid tribute to him in a special video was Sister Mary Margaret Pachucki, OP, Vicaress and General Councilor of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. “There’s just so much about Lloyd that makes him an outstanding leader,” Sister Mary Margaret said. “He’s accomplished many, many things that I’m sure were all great challenges, but he doesn’t shy away from that because his vision is for the good of all.”

In the video, Lloyd spoke of his call to healthcare ministry. “Certainly this ideal of service, the urge to recognize the need and suffering of others and to act on it, is what called me to Catholic healthcare,” he said.
