A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

The trees were massive! I was on retreat in southern Ohio and the most beautiful and striking part of the retreat grounds was the variety of very old, tall trees. The man who purchased the property over 100 years ago decided he wanted to have a tree of every type typical to that area, so he planted them. Now they haven’t all survived, but a good number have, and they offer blessing to each person who visits this special place.

Think of the vision of that man. He had a dream that he would never see fulfilled in his lifetime. He died before the trees were so majestic. But he did what he felt called to do. A vocation is like that. We may never have the whole picture of what God is doing through us on a particular path, but we can trust the call. Our ministry, our loving service – while offered in the present – will spread in ways we will never know. It may even seem that we have failed, if a large effort we have made comes to an end. But, we do touch others and that continues. A wise old Jesuit once said to me, “When you touch a person’s life, you’re affecting eternity.” What we do matters.

What are you called to plant?

Blessings,

Sister Lorraine
