A Pilgrimage to the Birthplace of St. Dominic 

In August, I was given the gift of being able to attend a gathering in Caleruega, Spain, the birthplace of St. Dominic, for young Dominican sisters from all around the world. While I was there, we were given the opportunity to see the horizons that were so familiar to Dominic de Guzman when he was a child, and to experience the arid beauty of the region. Caleruega is still an isolated small town in Spain, and I found myself reflecting on how amazing how Dominic set out from there, in a world without cars, trains or airplanes, and traveled to places as far away as Denmark, France and Italy. I could not help but wonder that a worldwide Order sprang from these humble beginnings. 

Pilgrimage has been a form of Christian prayer for millennia, and yet, I do not often think of it as an option to enhance and deepen my own prayer life. I did not grow up making pilgrimages or knowing people who were going on a pilgrimage, and even now when I know people who have traveled on the Santiago Compostela in Spain and have visited sacred sites, the idea seems remote, belonging to the Middles Ages, not the Space Age. However, during my time in Caleruega, I kept thinking of my experience as being a pilgrimage, not because I had traveled a great distance, but because of the relationships that were formed with my companions on the journey. While visiting the place that shaped St. Dominic’s earliest years humbled me, I keep coming back to the joy that I received in being part of the community that gathered in Caleruega. 

On your own journey, I pray that you might also know the blessing of being part of a community of pilgrims, whether that community forms near or far.

Una Peregrinación al Lugar de Nacimiento de San Domínico

En agosto, tuve el privilegio de asistir a una reunión en Caleruega, España, el lugar de Nacimiento de San Domínico, para jóvenes hermanas Domínicas de todo el mundo. Mientras estuve allí, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver los horizontes que eran tan conocidos por Domínico de Guzmán cuando era niño, y de experimentar la árida belleza de la región. Caleruega todavía es un pequeño pueblo aislado en España, y me encontré reflexionando sobre lo asombroso que fue que Domínico saliera de allí, en un mundo sin automóviles, trenes ni aviones, y viajara a lugares tan lejanos como Dinamarca, Francia e Italia. No pude evitar de quedar amaravillada en cómo una orden mundial surgió de estos humildes comienzos.

La peregrinación ha sido una forma de oración cristiana durante milenios y, sin embargo, no pienso mucho en ella como una opción para mejorar y profundizar en mi propia vida de oración. No crecí haciendo peregrinaciones ni conociendo a personas que iban en peregrinación, e incluso ahora, cuando conozco a personas que han viajado en el Camino de Santiago en España y han visitado lugares sagrados, la idea parece remota, perteneciente a la Edad Media, no a la Era Espacial. Sin embargo, durante mi tiempo en Caleruega, seguí pensando en mi experiencia como una peregrinación, no porque hubiera viajado una gran distancia, sino por las relaciones que se formaron con mis compañeras de viaje. Aunque el hecho de visitar el lugar que dio forma a los primeros años de San Domínico me hizo sentir honrada, sigo volviendo a la alegría que recibí al ser parte de la comunidad que se reunió en Caleruega.

En su propia jornada, oro para que también pueda conocer la bendición de ser parte de una comunidad de peregrinos, ya sea que esa comunidad se forme cerca o lejos.
