We are really getting a workout these days! I don’t know about you, but as the days move into weeks and the weeks into a month or more, I find myself getting impatient for circumstances to get better, for knowledge about who has the COVID-19 virus, who doesn’t, and for a target date to begin acting more normally. Friends assure me we have a distance to go yet. My head knows that, but in my heart I still feel impatient.

The same thing happens to us when we’re discerning our life direction. We do all the things we’ve been advised to do: prayed all the prayers, written down in a journal our thoughts and feelings, talked with a spiritual director and wise companions. Still, we don’t seem any clearer on our direction. It’s at this moment we might be tempted to give up or to just make a decision – any decision. We only want to be free of not knowing. We want certainty.

Discernment of important choices is a very intense process and an unforgiving one in some ways. It can be compared to a fairy tale in which a traveler walks down a long road and just before it’s time to turn at the curve of the road the traveler gives up and turns around, when if she had just gone a little farther she would have discovered the treasure she was seeking. 

In some stories there is an unexpected character who shows up just in the nick of time to encourage this weary traveler to walk just a little farther. In discernment, we also need those people who encourage us, who accompany us and remind us of our strength. Be on the lookout for those in your life, the ones who believe in you and encourage your listening, praying and, sometimes, taking a break from the intensity and seriousness of the process and having fun or a treat or just plain down time. The Spirit is in this process with us and we are never alone.

Una Prueba de Paciencia

¡Realmente estamos haciendo ejercicio estos días! No sé sobre usted, pero a medida que los días pasan a semanas y las semanas a un mes o más, me encuentro impaciente a que las circunstancias mejoren, por saber quién tiene el virus COVID-19, quién no, y por una fecha tope para comenzar a actuar con más normalidad. Mis amigas me aseguran que aún tenemos un largo camino por recorrer. Mi cabeza lo sabe, pero en mi corazón todavía me siento impaciente.

Lo mismo nos sucede cuando discernimos la dirección de nuestra vida. Hacemos todas las cosas que nos han aconsejado hacer: rezamos todas las oraciones, escribimos nuestros pensamientos y sentimientos en un diario, hablamos con un director espiritual y compañeras sabias. Aún así, nuestra dirección no es mas clara. Es en este momento que podríamos sentir la tentación de rendirnos o simplemente tomar una decision – cualquier decisión. Solo queremos ser libres de no saber. Queremos certeza.

El discernimiento de decisiones importantes es un proceso muy intenso y, de alguna manera, sin perdon. Se puede comparar con un cuento de hadas en el que una viajera camina por un largo camino y justo antes de que sea hora de voltear en la curva del camino, la viajera se da por vencida y se da la vuelta, cuando si hubiera ido un poco más lejos habría descubierto el tesoro que estaba buscando.

En algunas historias hay un personaje inesperado que aparece justo a tiempo para alentar a esta cansada viajera a caminar un poco más. En el discernimiento, también necesitamos aquellas personas que nos alienten, que nos acompañen y nos recuerden nuestra fortaleza. Esté atento a aquellas en su vida, aquellas que creen en usted y la alientan a escuchar, orar y, a veces, tomar un descanso de la intensidad y la seriedad del proceso y divertirse o disfrutar o simplemente relajarse. El Espíritu está en este proceso con nosotras y nunca estamos solas.
