Two weeks ago, Sister Mary identified what I believe to be a very important consideration when one is in the process of discernment. She writes that “God many times speaks to us through the wisdom of others.” How very true this is!

In the Scriptures, we read of many different ways that God calls individuals to engage in a particular way of life. We hear of Abraham’s call in Genesis 12, Isaiah’s call in chapter six of that book, Jeremiah’s call in chapter one of that prophetic book, and of Mary’s call in Luke 1. Each of these calls, like every individual’s, call is unique. However, in one particular passage, 1 Samuel 3:1-18, the priest Eli plays a special role in assisting the young Samuel how to respond to a “voice” that Samuel does not understand.

While Samuel was sleeping, he heard someone call to him. Thinking it was Eli, Samuel went to him and said “Here I am. You called me.” Eli responded “I did not call you. Go back to sleep.” Again, the young Samuel heard a call and went to Eli. Eli replied similarly to Samuel. A third time, Samuel heard a call and went to Eli. Scripture states that “then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So, he said to Samuel, ‘Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.””

Sharing our concerns about life with a trusted friend or mentor can be especially rewarding. Listening for God’s voice is always important, and that voice can come to us in rich and mysterious ways. Are you listening?

¿Está Escuchando?

Hace dos semanas, la Hermana Mary identificó algo que creo que sea muy importante de considerer cuando uno está en el proceso del discernimiento. Ella escribe que “Dios muchas veces nos habla a través de la sabiduría de otras.” ¡Cuán cierto es esto!

En las Escrituras, leemos de muchas formas diferentes en que Dios llama a las personas a participar en una forma de vida particular. Vemos el llamado de Abraham en Génesis 12, el llamado de Isaías en el capítulo seis de ese libro, el llamado de Jeremías en el capítulo uno de ese libro profético y el llamado de María en Lucas 1. Cada uno de estos llamados, como el de cada individuo, es único. Sin embargo, en un pasaje en particular, 1 Samuel 3:1-18, el sacerdote Elí juega un papel especial al ayudar al joven Samuel a responder a una “voz” que Samuel no entiende.

Mientras Samuel dormía, escuchó que alguien lo llamaba. Pensando que era Elí, Samuel se acercó a él y le dijo: “Aquí estoy. Me llamaste." Eli respondió: “Yo no te llamé. Vuelve a dormir." Nuevamente el joven Samuel escuchó un llamado y fue a Elí.  Elí volvió y le respondió de manera similar a Samuel. Por tercera vez, Samuel escuchó un llamado y fue a Elí. La Escritura dice que “entonces entendió Elí que el Señor llamaba al joven. Entonces dijo a Samuel: “Ve a dormir, y si te llaman, responde: Habla, Señor, que tu siervo escucha.”

Compartir nuestras preocupaciones sobre la vida con una amiga o mentor de confianza puede ser especialmente gratificante. Siempre es importante escuchar la voz de Dios, y esa voz puede llegar a nosotras de maneras ricas y misteriosas. ¿Está escuchando?
