Recently, I found myself having conversations about itinerancy and mendicancy and how they are an important part of Dominican life, but then I began to realize that they are both also an important part of our discernment. For Dominicans, we often understand itinerancy as both literal travel to new places and as the willingness to consider new perspectives and points of view. Mendicancy helps us to live out an itinerant lifestyle because it is the practice of holding onto things lightly and asking for what we need. Both of these come together in discernment in our willingness to go on a journey with God. Through itinerancy, we are willing to go in new directions at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. One way this might look is that I had to move to Adrian, Michigan when I became a Candidate, so that I could fully immerse myself in learning about the Adrian Dominican Sisters. I also had to shift my own understandings through the process of discernment, for example, I learned about how the Sisters understood and lived out the vow of obedience as being a process of dialogue and listening, and, in so doing, letting go of my own assumptions about what obedience meant. In this process, mendicancy is crucial, because we show our trust that God will give us what we need in order to bring a decision into reality. In the examples that I gave above, this was done by having a community and a home while I was a Candidate and by studying articles and having conversations about obedience with my Sisters.

In closing, I invite you to reflect on these two questions:

How has discernment called you to new places, and where might it be calling you now?

How has God given you what you need so that you can answer the call in your life?

Estar Dispuesta a Viajar

Recientemente, me encontré teniendo conversaciones sobre la itinerancia y la mendicidad y cómo son una parte importante de la vida Domínica, pero luego comencé a darme cuenta de que ambas son también una parte importante de nuestro discernimiento. Para las Domínicas, a menudo entendemos la itinerancia como un viaje literal a nuevos lugares y como la voluntad de considerar nuevas perspectivas y puntos de vista. La mendicidad nos ayuda a vivir un estilo de vida itinerante porque es la práctica de aferrarnos a las cosas levemente y pedir por lo que necesitamos. Ambos se unen en discernimiento en nuestra disposición a emprender un viaje con Dios. A través de la itinerancia, estamos dispuestas a ir en nuevas direcciones bajo la inspiración del Espíritu Santo. Una de las formas en que esto podría verse es que tuve que mudarme a Adrian, Michigan cuando me convertí en Candidata, para poder sumergirme completamente en el aprendizaje de las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian. También tuve que cambiar mi propio entendimiento a través del proceso de discernimiento, por ejemplo, aprendí cómo las Hermanas entendían y vivían el voto de obediencia como un proceso de diálogo y de escuchar y, al hacerlo, dejar ir mis propias suposiciones sobre lo que significaba la obediencia. En este proceso, la mendicidad es fundamental, porque mostramos nuestra confianza en que Dios nos dará lo que necesitamos para hacer realidad una decisión. En los ejemplos que di arriba, esto se hizo teniendo una comunidad y un hogar mientras era Candidata y estudiando artículos y teniendo conversaciones sobre la obediencia con mis Hermanas.

En conclusión, las invito a reflexionar sobre estas dos preguntas:

¿Cómo la ha llamado el discernimiento a nuevos lugares, y dónde podría estar llamándola ahora?

¿Cómo le ha dado Dios lo que necesita para que pueda responder al llamado en su vida?
