Blessings Abound

As the Jubilee Year of Hope was coming to a close, I had the opportunity to join with almost 20,000 young adults for five days at SEEK2026 event in Columbus, Ohio. SEEK participants are on fire with Christ. They gathered “to encounter Christ through prayer, adoration, sacraments, and inspiring speakers.” During the open times, the young people were invited to visit with representatives from religious congregations and religious groups, learning more about the practice of their faith – some exploring vocational opportunities.

Several young people visited the tables sponsored by the Dominican Sisters. Our Sisters invited those stopping by to write a note to some of our retired Sisters. The authors of these notes were most anxious to hear about the lives of the women to whom they were writing.

In appreciation for their visit to our table, the Dominican Sisters from Adrian, Peace, Sinsinawa, and Springfield, gathered around the GenZ’ers and sang the Dominican blessing over them. Tears came to the eyes of so many of the participants as they opened their hearts and hands to receive the 13th century blessing that they were offered by the Sisters.

Blessings are a wonderful expression of care and goodwill within our Catholic tradition. We often bless ourselves with the sign of the cross when praying, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Each time we prepare to leave Mass, the priest blesses us on our way as we return to our homes and communities. Parents bless their children.

It is a beautiful tradition in our Church to offer a blessing. We forget sometimes that we all have the power to give a blessing, to receive a blessing, and to be a blessing. Abraham Hershel once noted, “Just to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy.”

Blessings are not only expressed in words. A blessing can take on multiple forms and shapes. Good health, opportunities, relationships, and challenges leading to growth are all blessings that many of us, too often, take for granted.

The young people who were at the SEEK conference were a blessing in support of one another and are a blessing to our Church. They will be a blessing to each of the Sisters who will be receiving a postcard from the SEEK event. These young adults are a visible sign of the vitality of our Church today.

Bendiciones Abundan

Al acercarse el fin del Año Jubileo de la Esperanza, tuve la oportunidad de acompañar a casi 20,000 jóvenes adultos durante cinco días en el evento SEEK2026 en Columbus, Ohio. Los participantes de SEEK están apasionados por Cristo. Se reunieron para “encontrar a Cristo a través de la oración, la adoración, los sacramentos y oradores inspiradores.” Durante los momentos de puertas abiertas, los jóvenes fueron invitados a conversar con representantes de congregaciones y grupos religiosos, aprendiendo más sobre la práctica de su fe - algunos explorando oportunidades vocacionales.

Varios jóvenes visitaron las mesas patrocinadas por las Hermanas Domínicas. Nuestras Hermanas invitaron a quienes pasaban a escribir una nota a algunas de nuestras Hermanas jubiladas. Las autoras de estas notas estaban muy ansiosas por conocer la vida de las mujeres a las que se dirigían.

En agradecimiento por su visita a nuestra mesa, las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian, Paz, Sinsinawa y Springfield se reunieron con las GenZ y cantaron la bendición Domínica sobre ellas. A muchas participantes se les llenaron los ojos de lágrimas al abrir sus corazones y manos para recibir la bendición del siglo 13 que les ofrecieron las Hermanas.

Las bendiciones son una maravillosa expresión de cariño y buena voluntad en nuestra tradición Católica. A menudo nos bendecimos con la señal de la cruz al rezar, “En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”. Cada vez que nos preparamos para salir de la misa, el sacerdote nos bendice al regresar a nuestros hogares y comunidades. Los padres bendicen a sus hijos.

Es una hermosa tradición en nuestra Iglesia ofrecer una bendición. A veces olvidamos que todos tenemos el poder de dar una bendición, recibir una bendición, y ser una bendición. Abraham Hershel dijo una vez, “El simple hecho de ser es una bendición. El simple hecho de vivir es santo”.

Las bendiciones no se expresan solo con palabras. Una bendición puede tomar múltiples formas. La buena salud, las oportunidades, las relaciones, y los desafíos que producen crecimiento, todas son bendiciones que muchas de nosotras, muchas veces, pasamos por alto.

Las jóvenes que asistieron a la conferencia SEEK fueron una bendición al apoyarse mutuamente y son una bendición para nuestra Iglesia. Serán una bendición para cada una de las Hermanas que recibirán una postal del evento SEEK. Estas jóvenes adultas son un signo visible de la vitalidad de nuestra Iglesia hoy.
