Friends share half the burden. “The burden?” you ask. Yes, discerning what you are called to do with your life can feel burdensome at some points in the process. However, sharing the journey with good friends can help lift its weightiness. 

Today there are many options for committing our lives. Our friends know us and know what we’re good at. Some perceptive friends may see us more clearly than we see ourselves. I can picture a conversation over coffee or tea (after COVID of course!) in which one friend asks the other for feedback on her discernment efforts. How might a good friend respond if I ask, “What gifts do you think I have?” or “Do you think I would do well if I was working with immigrants or people who are struggling with food insecurity or with homelessness?”

If talking aloud with a friend seems premature, you can try an exercise of imagining what your good friend would say in response to these questions. Jotting down what you imagine their responses would be can be even more helpful. When you feel ready to bring up this conversation with your friend, you may feel more confident as you feel heard.

Friends love and accept us as we are. That’s why friends are so important! Why not talk with your friends and see if they give voice to God’s call for you? God does speak to us through others. You may also find support during our virtual Come and See Discernment Weekend.

¡Amigas Esenciales!

Amigas comparten mitad de la carga. “¿La carga?” se pregunta. Sí, discernir a qué ha sido llamada en hacer en su vida podrá sentirse como una carga durante ciertos momentos en el proceso. Sin embargo, compartiendo la jornada con buenas amigas podrá aliviar la carga.

Hoy tenemos muchas opciones a qué comprometer nuestras vidas. Nuestras amigas nos conocen y conocen qué son nuestras fuerzas. Algunas amigas sabias nos verán más claramente que nosotras mismas. Puedo imaginar una conversación sobre un café o un té (¡después del COVID, por su puesto!) en la cual una amiga le pregunta a la otra amiga por su opinión sobre sus esfuerzos de discernimiento. ¿Cómo podrá responder una buena amiga si pregunto?, “¿Qué talentos crees que yo tenga?” o “¿Crees que haré bién si trabajara con inmigrantes o personas que están batallando con la incertidumbre de no tener comida o un hogar?”

Si hablando a voz alta con una amiga le parece prematuro, puede tratar un ejercicio de imaginar que diría su buena amiga en respuesta a estas preguntas. Apuntando lo que usted se imagina qué serían las respuestas le podrá ayudar aún más. Cuando se sienta lista a llevar a cabo esta conversación con su amiga, se sentirá con más confianza de haber sido escuchada.

Nuestras amigas nos aman y nos aceptan como somos. ¡Por eso las amigas son tan importantes! ¿Por qué no hablar con sus amigas y vea si le dan voz al llamado de Dios para su vida?
