A Sister Reflects - Reflexión de una Hermana

Exceptionally Ordinary | Excepcionalmente Ordinario

a field full of daisies

On August 24, we celebrated the feast of St. Bartholomew. Are you familiar with his story? Most likely not. While Bartholomew is named in the Scriptures four times as “one of the twelve” (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13), we know very little about him. Interesting, isn’t it?! We might think that because the apostles were exceptionally close to Jesus, each had an especially important role in spreading the Good News. And this is likely quite true. However, there are no special stories that tell us anything more about Bartholomew. His name only appears in four lists where he is simply one in a dozen.

Reflecting on Bartholomew has caused me to consider the myriads of women and men whom God has invited and continues to invite into relationship. The vast majority of these individuals are not well known. They have no autobiographies or biographies written of their lives. They have not and will not be acclaimed in the public arena for their lives of fidelity. And yet, these are our sisters and brothers who are responsible for helping to bring about the Kingdom of God. These are the women and men whose stories are known to only a few.

As we discern how God invites us to live our lives as faithful followers of Jesus, let us remember that we have countless companions on this journey.

Peace and blessings,
Sister Maribeth Howell, OP

Excepcionalmente Ordinario

Interesante, ¿no?

Paz y bendiciones,
Hermana Maribeth Howell, OP
