Faithful Is the One Who Calls | Fiel es el Que Llama

Throughout the Easter season, that is, from Easter Sunday and through the Feast of Pentecost on June 5th, the First Reading on Sundays, as well as many of the first weekday readings, are taken from the Acts of the Apostles, commonly referred to as “Acts.” This book provides us with a close look at the early church, a time when the early followers of Jesus were enthusiastically spreading the “Good News.”

This was a time when those who heard the message of Jesus’ followers were invited to discern if they wanted to join the company of believers. What would they need to leave behind? How would their lives change? What would becoming a follower of “the Way,” mean?

Such questions are typical of every individual’s vocation. Regardless of whether one commits oneself to marriage, the single life, or religious life, responding to a “call/vocation,” consists of three things. First, some things will be left behind. Second, life will be different. Third, the future will be uncertain. Isn’t this true of most all major decisions in life? Making serious choices means letting go of certainty. For those of us who believe we are called by God, there is one certainty… God is with us.

When we turn to the many call stories in the Scriptures, we learn that not everyone was enthusiastic about the call they received. Consider Abraham, Moses, or Jeremiah. Like each of us, they must have had questions about what this call would mean for themselves and for those they loved. Repeatedly, we hear one assurance: I will be with you.

As we continue to listen to the story of the early church found in the Acts of the Apostles, let us pray that we too, might trust in the mysterious ways of God and that we might believe in the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Easter Blessings!

Considere a Abraham, Moisés o Jeremías.

Hermana Maribeth
