In the United States, the month of October is Family History Month, and during this month, I like to spend some time celebrating the stories in my family tree. I enjoy the opportunity to learn more about my ancestors who were everything from pioneers to cavaliers, scoundrels to saints, not to mention everything in-between. I especially like to take a moment to remember other members of my family who also entered into religious life, and to be grateful for the gift of their lives in service to the people of God.

Now, I belong to more than my biological family. In addition to the physical DNA I share with my parents, I also share “spiritual DNA” with many other Dominicans. This looks like the spirit I share with the Sisters who make up my congregation, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, and I share that same spirit with all the Dominican communities around the world. Their stories are also important to me, and I have found inspiration from the women who have gone before me, from the early Sisters who arrived in Adrian, Michigan to become nurses to railroad workers to the many Sisters who have worked for the justice of those living on the margins. Their stories have become part of how I see myself today, the same as those stories I learned growing up about my family of origin.

Now, as a member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, my own story is part of the larger story of my community. This is truly the gift of community, as we recognize that our stories are part of the whole and that they affect the whole. The ministries I have participated in and the relationships I am part of speak to who I am and who we are together. During this Family History Month, I know that I am, truly, a member of the Dominican Family.

Historias de la Familia

En los Estados Unidos, el mes de octubre se reconoce como el Mes de la Historia Familiar, y durante este mes, me gusta pasar tiempo celebrando las historias de mi árbol genealógico. Disfruto la oportunidad de aprender más sobre mis antepasados que fueron de todo, desde pioneros hasta caballeros, sinvergüenzas y santos, sin mencionar todo lo demás. Me gusta especialmente tomarme un momento para recordar a otros miembros de mi familia que también entraron a la vida religiosa, y agradecer el don de sus vidas al servicio al Pueblo de Dios.

Ahora, pertenezco a más que solo de mi familia biológica. Además del ADN físico que comparto con mis padres, también comparto el “ADN espiritual” con muchas otras Domínicas. Este se parece al espíritu que comparto con las hermanas que componen mi congregación, las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian, y comparto ese mismo espíritu con todas las comunidades Domínicas de todo el mundo. Sus historias también son importantes para mí, y he obtenido inspiración de las mujeres que me han precedido, desde las primeras hermanas que llegaron a Adrian, Michigan para ser enfermeras y hasta trabajadoras del ferrocarril, y aun muchas hermanas que han trabajado por la justicia de aquellos que viven en los márgenes. Sus historias forman parte en cómo me identifico hoy, al igual como aquellas historias sobre mi familia de origen que aprendí durante mi niñéz.

Ahora, como miembra de las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian, mi propia historia forma parte de la más amplia historia de mi comunidad. Esto es verdaderamente el regalo de comunidad, que podamos reconocer que nuestras historias forman parte del total y que impactan el total. Los ministerios en los cuales he participado y las relaciones en las que formo parte hablan de quién soy y quiénes somos juntas. Durante este Mes de la Historia Familiar, sé que soy, verdaderamente, una miembra de la Familia Domínica.
