One of the gifts that my parents gave me was that they did not pressure me into choosing a particular major when I was in college. While the subject of Medieval Studies might not be considered a safe choice, they trusted that I was choosing something that would make me happy and provide a foundation for wherever I ended up. In fact, I have drawn upon so much about what I learned during that time in my ministries since then, including a deep understanding of ecclesial history, my understanding of rituals and learning that events or cultural structures might be more complex than they first appeared. I was able to make the choice to pursue my major because I had freedom to make a choice, both because I had the financial means to pursue a degree and because I was not being pressured in my decision. 

Often what holds us back from freedom in discernment is not as obvious as the example above. Sometimes the lack of freedom is our own overcommitment that holds us back from time we can devote to discernment. Sometimes the lack of freedom comes from bad habits or addictions. Sometimes, the lack of freedom comes because we cannot hear God’s voice among all the other voices that surround us or come from within. Only when we address these issues that inhibit us and hold us captive can we enter honestly into a conversation with God about where God might be calling us.

Libertad

Uno de los regalos que me dieron mis padres fue que no me presionaron para elegir una carrera en particular cuando estaba en la universidad. Aunque el tema de Estudios Medievales podría no considerarse una opción segura, confiaron en que estaba eligiendo algo que me haría feliz y me daría un fundamento para donde sea que terminara. De hecho, he usado mucho de lo que aprendí durante ese tiempo en mis ministerios, incluyendo una comprensión profunda de la historia eclesial, mi comprensión de los rituales y el entendimiento de que los eventos o las estructuras culturales pueden ser más complejos de lo que parecían al principio. Pude tomar la decisión de seguir mi carrera porque tenía la libertad de elegir, tanto porque tenía los medios financieros para obtener un título y el hecho de que no estaba siendo presionada en mi decisión.

Muchas veces, lo que nos impide tener libertad en el discernimiento no es tan obvio como el ejemplo anterior. A veces, la falta de libertad es nuestro propio exceso de compromiso que nos impide dedicar tiempo al discernimiento. A veces la falta de libertad proviene de malos hábitos o adicciones. A veces, la falta de libertad viene porque no podemos escuchar la voz de Dios entre todas las otras voces que nos rodean o las que vienen de adentro. Solo cuando enfrentamos estos problemas que nos detienen y nos mantienen cautivas podemos entrar honestamente en una conversación con Dios acerca de a dónde Dios podría estar llamándonos.
