A couple of weeks ago, I watched Disney’s movie, Encanto, with my community. In the movie, each member of the family receive a magical gift when they turn five years old, and this reminded me of the importance of gifts within our lives. Each of us have also received gifts, whether a talent for math or an ability to listen well; however, sometimes we have a difficult time recognizing what our gifts might be. Sometimes our gifts are not recognized by those around us, sometimes we do not have the opportunity to foster a particular gift that requires learning and practicing skills, and sometimes we simply have not had the opportunity to have a gift called forth from us. 

Taking time to recognize and acknowledge our gifts is one of the first steps of discernment, and one that we return to many times throughout our life. The ability to know our gifts provides clarity in identifying where God might be calling us and helps us know what possibilities are attractive to us. Some questions that might help us to begin this process are:

• What sparks joy in my life? 

• What have other people noticed that I do well? 

• What talents have I nurtured with my resources of time, money and passion? 

• What qualities do I notice in myself when I’m at my best?

Dotadas para el Mundo

Hace un par de semanas, vi la película de Disney, Encanto, con mi comunidad. En la película, cada miembro de la familia recibe un regalo mágico cuando cumplen cinco años, y esto me recordó la importancia de los dones en nuestras vidas. Cada una de nosotras también hemos recibido dones, ya sea un talento para las matemáticas o la capacidad de escuchar bien; sin embargo, a veces nos cuesta reconocer cuáles podrían ser nuestros dones. A veces, nuestros dones no son reconocidos por quienes nos rodean, a veces no tenemos la oportunidad de fomentar un don particular que requiere habilidades de aprendizaje y práctica, y a veces simplemente no hemos tenido la oportunidad de que un don sea pedido de nosotras.

Tomarse el tiempo para reconocer nuestros dones es uno de los primeros pasos del discernimiento, y al que volvemos muchas veces a lo largo de nuestra vida. La capacidad de conocer nuestros dones brinda claridad para identificar dónde Dios podría estar llamándonos y nos ayuda a saber qué posibilidades nos atraen. Algunas preguntas que nos pueden ayudar a iniciar este proceso son:

• ¿Qué despierta alegría en mi vida?

• ¿Qué han notado otras personas que hago bien?

• ¿Qué talentos he cultivado con mis recursos de tiempo, dinero y pasión?

• ¿Qué cualidades noto en mí misma cuando estoy en mi mejor momento?
