Joy to the Heart | Alegría al Corazón

Joy to the Heart

What gives joy to your heart? Psalm 19 in the Hebrew scriptures describes the law of the Lord as something that brings joy to the heart. It goes on to describe the law as sweetness and goodness, trustworthy, refreshing, and enlightening. Thinking about laws and rules doesn’t really fall into that category of bringing joy to me. Joy for me comes from the people and the events and the moments of encouragement, enlightenment, goodness, and usually fun that I share with them!

Thinking about joy in my life takes me to my early days in grade school, when I loved going to Mass with my Catholic school class. In second grade, when I made my first Holy Communion, I couldn’t wait to receive Jesus, but I was also so happy when I received the prayer book to follow the words of the Mass. The words spoken and sung by the priest and the choir were in Latin, but I could follow them in English. That memory still gives joy to my heart.

As I continued on my journey of life and faith and followed my desire to become a Sister, I had many moments of joy. As my parents brought me to the Motherhouse on entrance day, we were quiet on the drive and a little sad to say goodbye, but being at the beginning of becoming a Sister was a real joy for me.

In the years of teaching and learning that followed, I had many times of joy as new students came to my classrooms and enjoyed our time together. Sharing times of celebration and community time with the Sisters and welcoming new nieces and nephews to my personal family were always gifts of joy.

What gives joy to your heart? In our world today, we have access to global news and find that there is very little joy being reported. War, poverty, tragedy, and struggle seem to be in the headlines with little reference to any joy. Amidst the sad, bad news, perhaps the joy in our hearts has to be a source of encouragement and goodness, even in a small way, to those around us.

As your prayer and vocation discernment continues, consider how following the call of God can bring joy to your heart. Talk with others about what brings joy to their hearts and see what joy God can provide for you. Rejoice in whatever brings joy to your heart.

Alegría al Corazón

¿Qué alegra su corazón? El Salmo 19, en las Escrituras Hebreas, describe la ley del Señor como algo que alegra el corazón. Continúa describiéndola como dulce y bondadosa, confiable, refrescante e iluminadora. Pensar en leyes y normas no me alegra. Para mí, la alegría proviene de las personas, los acontecimientos y los momentos de aliento, iluminación, bondad y, generalmente, alegría que comparto con ellos!

Pensar en la alegría de mi vida me lleva a mis primeros años de primaria, cuando me encantaba ir a misa con mis compañeras de la escuela Católica. En segundo grado, cuando hice mi Primera Comunión, estaba deseando recibir a Jesús, pero también me sentí muy feliz cuando recibí el libro de oración para seguir las palabras de la misa. Las palabras dichas y cantadas por el sacerdote y el coro eran en latín, pero podía seguirlas en Inglés. Ese recuerdo todavía me llena de alegría.

Mientras que continuaba mi camino de vida y fe, y seguía mi deseo de ser Hermana, tuve muchos momentos de alegría. Cuando mis padres me llevaron a la Casa Madre el día de la entrada, el viaje fue tranquilo y un poco triste al despedirnos, pero estar al comienzo de mi camino hacia ser Hermana era una verdadera alegría para mí.

En los años de enseñanza y aprendizaje que siguieron, disfruté mucho de la alegría de los nuevos alumnos que llegaban a mis aulas y disfrutaban de nuestro tiempo juntos. Compartir momentos de celebración y convivencia con las Hermanas y dar la bienvenida a los nuevos sobrinos y sobrinas a mi familia siempre fue un regalo de alegría.

¿Qué le alegra el corazón? En nuestro mundo actual, tenemos acceso a noticias globales y encontramos que se informa muy poco sobre la alegría. La guerra, la pobreza, la tragedia y la lucha parecen estar en los titulares, sin mencionar la alegría. En medio de las tristes, malas noticias, quizás la alegría en nuestros corazones debe ser una fuente de aliento y bondad, aunque sea en una forma pequeña, para quienes nos rodean.

Mientras continúa su oración y discernimiento vocacional, considere cómo el seguir el llamado de Dios puede alegrar su corazón. Hable con otras sobre lo que le alegra el corazón y descubra qué alegría puede darle Dios. Alégrese con lo que le alegra el corazón.
