Over Labor Day weekend, I had the opportunity to learn how to make pierogis with my community members. Under the watchful eye of our teacher, we mixed the filling and dough and then rolled and stuffed the pierogis. The best part of this experience is, of course, that we will get to enjoy pierogis for dinner! There are other benefits as well, especially the value in learning a new skill. 

As I rolled out the dough, I had occasion to reflect on how discernment is also a skill we need to learn. When I first started rolling out the dough, I was struggling to make the dough thin and even throughout, but, as I continued to practice, I got better at the skill of rolling the dough. Similarly, when we are discerning, it can seem awkward at first, and we may not be sure if we’ve done everything right. Have we spent enough time in prayer? Have we spent enough time in experiences that will help us discern, whether visiting communities, volunteering or meeting with a spiritual director? I learned what the dough needed to feel like by feeling the thickness and consistency rather than following the description in a recipe. Likewise, honoring our discernment is often more a case of feel rather than following a strict checklist, no matter how useful a checklist may be. With enough time and practice, we develop the sense that that all the pieces are in place. In the meantime, our attempts while we are learning and developing our skills will not perfect, but that is fine, as long as we continue to develop our relationship with God. My first attempts to make pierogis weren’t perfect either, but they are still delicious! In the meantime, keep practicing, and be assured that practicing is also part of the journey of discernment.

Aprendiendo Nuevas Habilidades

Durante el fin de semana del Día del Trabajo, tuve la oportunidad de aprender a hacer pierogis con los miembros de mi comunidad. Bajo la atenta mirada de nuestra maestra, mezclamos el relleno y la masa y luego enrollamos y rellenamos los pierogis. ¡La mejor parte de esta experiencia es, por supuesto, que disfrutaríamos de los pierogis para la cena! También existen otros beneficios, especialmente el valor de aprender una nueva habilidad.

Mientras extendía la masa, tuve la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre cómo el discernimiento también es una habilidad que debemos aprender. Cuando comencé a extender la masa por primera vez, estaba luchando para que la masa fuera delgada y uniforme, pero, a medida que continuaba practicando, mejoré en la habilidad de enrollar la masa. Del mismo modo, durante el discernimiento, puede parecer incómodo al principio y es posible que no estemos seguras de haber hecho todo bien. ¿Hemos pasado suficiente tiempo en oración? ¿Hemos pasado suficiente tiempo en experiencias que nos ayudarán a discernir, ya sea visitando comunidades, trabajar como voluntaria, o reuniéndonos con una directora espiritual? Aprendí cómo debía sentirse la masa sintiendo que tan grueso está y la consistencia en lugar de seguir la descripción de una receta. Del mismo modo, honrar nuestro discernimiento muchas veces es un caso de sentimiento en ves de seguir una lista de verificación estricta, sin importar cuán útil pueda ser una lista de verificación. Con suficiente tiempo y práctica, desarrollamos la sensación de que todas las piezas están en su lugar. Mientras tanto, nuestros intentos mientras aprendemos y desarrollamos nuestras habilidades no serán perfectos, pero eso está bien, siempre y cuando continuemos desarrollando nuestra relación con Dios. Mis primeros intentos de hacer pierogis tampoco fueron perfectos, ¡pero siguen siendo deliciosos! Mientras tanto, siga practicando y tenga la seguridad de que practicar también es parte de la jornada del discernimiento.
