When I was growing up, I learned the Our Father and Hail Mary in school, and, for years, I thought that this was how prayer was “supposed” to look. Later, I discovered that prayer can be a source of freedom, and can take many different forms because there are many different ways that we can talk to God, and that God can talk to us. One form of prayer that I have learned about is called Visio Divina. In this form of prayer, you look at a picture and ask what message God is speaking to us through that image. The image could be a stained glass window in a church, a religious painting, such as those of Fra Angelico, or another piece of art that speaks to you. I sometimes use an image from the evening news or local newspaper, where the images of the suffering around the world awakens me to the knowledge of God’s compassion. Other times, I look at a painting, and ask where I am in that painting today? The emotions and questions that an image evokes become the start of a conversation with God, which, in turn, draws me deeper into relationship with God.

Aprendiendo a Orar con Visio Divinia

Cuando era niño, aprendí el Padre Nuestro y el Ave María en la escuela y, durante años, pensé que así era como se “suponía” que debía verse la oración. Después, descubrí que la oración puede ser una fuente de libertad y puede tomar muchas formas diferentes porque hay muchas formas diferentes en las que podemos hablar con Dios, y que Dios puede hablarnos. Una forma de oración que he aprendido se llama Visio Divina. En esta forma de oración, miras una imagen y preguntas qué mensaje nos está hablando Dios a través de esa imagen. La imagen podría ser una vidriera en una iglesia, una pintura religiosa, como las de Fra Angelico, u otra obra de arte que le hable. A veces utilizo una imagen de las noticias de esa noche o del periódico local, donde las imágenes del sufrimiento en todo el mundo me despiertan al conocimiento de la compasión de Dios. Otras veces, miro una pintura y me pregunto ¿dónde estoy yo hoy en esa pintura. Las emociones y las preguntas que evoca una imagen se convierten en el comienzo de una conversación con Dios, que, a la vez, me lleva a una relación más profunda con Dios.
