Open to the Spirit

Next week, several young women from various locales throughout the United States will be meeting in Springfield, Illinois, to explore life as a Dominican Sister. The Springfield Dominicans Sisters are hosting this annual event at their Motherhouse. The gathering is a collaborative effort among the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, the Dominican Sisters of Peace, the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, as well as the Dominican Sisters of Springfield.

The purpose of this immersion experience into Dominican life is to allow the women in attendance an opportunity to briefly experience life as it is lived in the Dominican tradition. The time will be filled with prayer, experiences of service, community life, and study opportunities. A successful outcome to this endeavor will not necessarily be found in accruing religious vocations for our various congregations. Rather, success will be realized over time as the women discover for themselves greater clarity in ultimately “discerning” a life choice – discovering where God is calling them to be their best selves.

Discernment is the art of listening deeply for the voice of God amid the many voices that shape our lives. It is not simply deciding between options; it is seeking to discover where God’s Spirit is leading so that a response may be grounded in freedom, faith, and love.

Discernment involves paying attention to the movements of the heart – to both the experiences of peace, joy, energy, and hope that draw us closer to God, as well as to the anxieties, fears, or attachments that may pull us away from God’s desire for our flourishing. Discernment asks not only what I want for myself but also, “Where is God inviting me to give my life in love?

While prayerfully sorting through the possibilities of a life commitment, discernment is often described as learning to recognize the unique way God’s universal call to holiness takes shape in one’s life. Discernment is far more than choosing a career and more about discovering the path through which one can most fully love God, serve others, and become the person one is created to be.

As theologian and spiritual writer Frederick Buechner famously observed, vocation is found “where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” The Sisters who have been busy planning next week’s immersion experience, as well as so very many of the Sisters who have found fullness of life as a vowed Dominican sister, are praying that this experience will help the women attending to discover that meeting place for themselves.

Our God has come that all might have life and life to its fullest!

La próxima semana, varias jóvenes de diferentes lugares de los Estados Unidos se reunirán en Springfield, Illinois, para explorar la vida como religiosa Domínica. Las Hermanas Domínicas de Springfield organizan este evento anual en su Casa Madre. El encuentro es una iniciativa conjunta de las Hermanas Domínicas de Adrian, las Hermanas Domínicas de la Paz, las Hermanas Domínicas de Sinsinawa y las Hermanas Domínicas de Springfield.

El propósito de esta experiencia de inmersión en la vida Domínica es brindarle a las mujeres participantes la oportunidad de experimentar brevemente la vida tal como se vive en la tradición Domínica. El tiempo estará dedicado a la oración, experiencias de servicio, vida comunitaria y oportunidades de estudio. El éxito de esta iniciativa no radicará necesariamente en el aumento de vocaciones religiosas para nuestras diversas congregaciones. Más bien, el éxito se verá con el tiempo, a medida que las mujeres descubran por sí mismas una mayor claridad para discernir su vocación de vida, descubriendo dónde Dios las llama a ser la mejor versión de sí mismas.

El discernimiento es el arte de escuchar atentamente la voz de Dios entre las muchas voces que forman a nuestras vidas. No se trata simplemente de elegir entre opciones; sino de buscar hacia dónde nos guía el Espíritu de Dios para que nuestra respuesta esté fundamentada en la libertad, la fe y el amor.

El discernimiento implica prestar atención a los movimientos del corazón - tanto a las experiencias de paz, alegría, energía y esperanza que nos acercan a Dios, como a las ansiedades, los miedos o los apegos que pueden alejarnos del deseo de Dios de nuestro bienestar. El discernimiento no solo pregunta qué quiero para mí misma, sino también:
"¿Dónde me invita Dios a entregar mi vida con amor?".

Al reflexionar en oración sobre las posibilidades de un compromiso de vida, el discernimiento se describe muchas veces como aprender a reconocer la manera única en que el llamado universal de Dios a la santidad se manifiesta en la vida de cada uno. El discernimiento va mucho más allá de elegir una carrera; se trata de descubrir el camino a través del cual uno puede amar a Dios plenamente, servir a los demás y convertirse en la persona que está creada a ser.

Como bien observó el teólogo y escritor espiritual Frederick Buechner, la vocación se encuentra "donde se halla su profunda alegría y la profunda necesidad del mundo". Las Hermanas que han estado ocupadas planificando la experiencia de inmersión de la próxima semana, así como muchas de las Hermanas que han encontrado la plenitud de la vida como religiosas Domínicas consagradas, oran para que esta experiencia le ayude a las mujeres a descubrir ese punto de encuentro para sí mismas.
